Guest guest
Dee, I had infiltrating/invasive ductal in 1990. I had 23 nodes removed and one was bad. I had 6 mo of chemo which wasn't bad at all, no radiation or reconstruction. I also had to have chest x-ray, blood work, I had to have an EKG and I think an MRI. My tumor was 2.5cm. One cm isn't bad at all. Breast cancer is NOT the death sentence it was once thought to be. I was Stage II grade II which you won't find out until you get the pathology report. There are ladies that are Stage IV, whos cancer has returned many times that are still doing ok. I know its scary. We all feel scared. Fear of the unknown is the worst. Once you have surgery and know what the plan is for afterwards it will get better. Try to take it day by day or if need be hour by hour. We are all here for you to help you along the way. Feel free to ask any questions, vent etc. I will keep you in my prayers. Guest guest
Don't worry! You will find that the medical community uses a lot of words that will scare us. Just take time to educate yourself. Ask alot of questions( it really helps because then you can come to terms with fears - at least that helped me this time = I had my first surgical biopsy when I was 19) ne > > Dee, > I had infiltrating/invasive ductal in 1990. Guest guest
Hi Dee, When I got the results of the needle biopsy, over the phone, a radiologist bluntly said, " Yep, you have Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. " He said it as easily as a person might say, " The sky is blue. " He definitely deserved an F- in bedside manner! I was so scared. As you say, " invasive " sounds really frightening! Take a deep breath and remember " One day at a time. " I know. It's a lot easier said than done but it's so true. Take heart that 1 cm is small. I remember wanting the cancer out IMMEDIATELY. I was told by the breast care specialist (an angel of a woman!) not to worry. Usually, by the time even small cancers are found, they've been growing for a fairly long while. A few weeks or a month would not make a difference, I was told. Does your hospital have a breast care specialist? I am with Kaiser. Their Breast Care Specialist was so very helpful, reassuring, calming, and always there to answer any question, help get test results, etc. If there is one where you are being treated, be sure to take advantage of that service. I'm now 3-1/2 years out. I must say that I've had wonderful care. My oncologist is a wonderful man who makes all of his patients feel like they are his only one. I elected to have a lumpectomy. It was followed by CMF chemo and then radiation daily for 35 days. I was then put on Tamoxifen for 2-1/2 yrs. and have been on Arimidex for 6 months, so far. I wish I would have known about this wonderful list when I was going through active treatment! We are here for you. You'll get through this! A gentle hug to you, Jill HI THIS IS DEE I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH THE NURSE. Guest guest
Hi Dee and welcome to this group. I also have an invasive cancer, Stage 1, Grade 3. I had a lumpectomy and at the same time I had a sentinal lymph node biopsy, that's where they inject a dye into you and they can " see " the sentinal (main guy) node and take him out. If there is cancer in the main node (sentinal), then they may take more, or may even take a few more around the sentinal to test. Taking this node and testing it and evaluating your lump, will give them the tools they need to Grade and Stage your cancer. Then, you make decisions based upon that diagnosis. There are other tests involved in the pathology like ER and Her2nu tests. They can be either positive or negative. Certain cancers are fed by estrogen, and if you test positive for these tests, they will most likely recommend a course of treatment that best fits your set of " stats " . I would not be worried about the November date for your surgery. You DO have time - like others have posted, once they find a cancer, chances are that it's been there a while. If you have the opportunity to either borrow from the library or purchase a book, I recommend Dr. Love's Breast Cancer book. They way it is set up, you can read just what is appropriate or needed by your specific case. We've all been where you are now and it's very scary. So much information, so many tests, so much waiting for results. Just try and take it one day at a time and ask questions - you can never ask too many questions. If you don't know what a specific thing means, ask. Don't worry about sounding uneducated about it because we were ALL uneducated about it at one time. It's a process - you'll learn as you go and with support from family, friends and groups like this, you'll do just fine. Remember, most Breast Cancers do not have a family history. Most importantly, remember to be good to yourself - becoming strong takes time - staying strong takes time and support. Feel free to ask any questions you may have - we're all in this together. Guest guest
Hi Dee, Thankfully, the radiologist who called wasn't " my " radiologist. " My " radiologist is a woman and she couldn't have been sweeter. I asked about her when I had a recent mammogram. The technician asked if I wanted her (my radiologist) to read the films. I answered that I would be very happy with that. As for that man, though.... Perhaps you can ask your doctor to put you on a " cancellation " list so that if anyone cancels prior to your date in November, he or she can bump up your surgery date. Having said that, it seems like there has been a lot of waiting during this process. Sometimes I say the lesson I am to take from this, other than really valuing each day, is patience! Not to worry about the spelling! The important thing is that you are here and we are here for you! God bless you, too, Jill HI THIS IS DEE > > > I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH THE NURSE. Guest guest
- Jill What Kaiser location are you at? I have Kaiser too and at least here in Denver there is no Breast Care Specialist. Or for that matter anyone who coordinates you care at all. 3 seperate steps and three seperate Dr's who don't communicate with each other at all. Really difficult for the patient to negotiate and figure out care. I had surgery was refered to Oncology for Chemo and after I complete Chemo I will receive a referal to Radiation Oncology but they never get together and figure out a total treatment plan. in Denver In breastcancer2 , " rockportdee " wrote: > > > >OH MY YOUR RADIOLIGIST NEEDS TO FIND ANOTHER JOB THANK YOU FOR > YOUR GENTLE HUG I CAN FEEL IT BELIEVE IT OR NOT. > I AM AT ALLEGHENY GENERAL HOSPITAL BREAST CENTER IN PITTSBURGH, pA > AND I TRUST THEM EXCEPT WITH THIS PART OF WAITING TILL NOVEMBER > 20TH.
