Guest guest
Dear , I am new to this list and was sorry to hear about your daughter being nearly deaf. We have had a similar thing in which my 5yo boy may have to repeat pre-primary because of a language disability. Rather than starting grade one and not coping he will repeat the year he is doing now. I had to really talk to myself to work things through because I felt awfully guilty because of it. I could have really lost the plot and eaten severely over it. Instead I have to remember that " these things happen " and that sometimes they happen to you and the facts of the matter are that you cared enough as a parent to take her for that hearing test in which you found out she was nearly deaf. I had been taking to speech therapy for nine months and was aware of a lisping problem but not the language disability. I have seen myself through it and am a stronger person because of it. I presume you are having surgery on 7th October. All the best. Because of the swollen tissue around the band, it is advisable to live on pureed foods for one month and that will be your greatest weight loss. I found that after two weeks, if I chewed everything to death I could eat steak and chips which was not the result I wanted. However if anything got stuck, I would have intense pain in the sternum region which would come and go in waves until I vomited so I learned to take the easy way out and stuck my fingers down my throat for just a gentle vomit for relief. I am ex-bulimic so I didn't have an issue problem with that. Also my mouth produced copious amounts of saliva which just had to drip into the toilet. I don't think I have put you off because this is the worst case scenario for me. I am glad I had surgery and would have it again. It is only occasionally that this happens, usually when I eat too fast, too much or the wrong types of food. I have to be careful when dining out. I can only really fit the entree in (so it makes eating out cheaper) and I have to eat slowly and know where the toilet is. I am learning to eat what I really like and not just what comes in the greater quantities. Quality not quantity. I love Japanese food. My surgeon did not tell me anything much except that this operation was 100% successful for weight loss ( yeah but how much weight loss per person). I was led to believe that 1/2 a cup of food would leave me feeling full and satisfied for hours. Not the case but it is infinitesimally easier to diet with the band. It makes dieting possible and you do feel fuller on less but not as much as I was led to believe. I believe I will get to goal weight in two years. For me it is still a miracle. I will be thinking of you on that date. I know just what you will be going through. Guest guest
, thankyou for your lovely email. We have a lot in common...except I'm a Bounty bar woman myself. And, I love Japanese food so much I married one (a japanese man I mean). He is looking forward to this operation too. He has never said anything about the 30 kilo weight gain since we were married, but it has really affected our sex life. I just don't feel sexy AT ALL. Every now and then in the morning he rolls over and whispers a sweet nothing in my ear to which I snap: Forget it Slopey, go and make me a hot chocolate! and he goes back to looking downtrodden. I think he is looking forward to an emotional change as much as anything else. Our daughter goes in for surgery on both her ears on Tuesday. Obviously, I am horrified, but the outcome will hopefully be that she gets her hearing back, and that's all that matters. I have also started speech pathology with her, and she said her first word the other day....TELLYTUBBIES! My husband and i cried rivers of joy and she now has every Tellytubby accessory known to man, little bugger. I laughed and laughed about your well-practised vomiting techniques (eventhough I realise the reality isn't funny, but ya gotta laugh, right). I myself HATE to vomit more than almost anything in the world. I would rather have my limbs removed without anaesthetic than be nauseous. Guess I'll have to get over that one though. God, your parents and inlaws sound like real champions. Up theirs eh. Thanks again, Steph.
