I wash the helmet after every wear, including using a sanitizer foam. Washing the hair every day will also help, but chances are that she will still smell a little, its probably unavoidable. We also rub corn starch in the helmet with every use, it helps a lot with the sweating and not having the helmet stick so bad during the hot weather. Try cleaning the band with 91% or 99% rubbing alcohol. That was what was

recommended to us by our ortho. I would pour some in the band then scrub it

with a toothbrush. Let it dry well before putting it back on your

daughter's head. I've heard that letting it air dry out in the sun is

helpful but I never tried it as I was always washing it in the evening after

the sun went down. Also try washing your daughter's hair with a good

smelling children's shampoo; L'Oreal and Suave both make some good ones.

Hope this helps!

Problem with sweating...

Hi everyone

Just a quick question... My 11 month old girl has been in her helmet for

about 7 weeks now - with no problems except a few adjustments at the

beginning...

I'm in Sydney, Australia and the weather has started to warm up of late and

she seems to have this horrible smell when I remove her helmet. Seeing as

you guys over there have had a hot Summer - what can I do as our weather

heats up and does the smell go away after a while? I have started washing

her hair everynight and wiping her helmet down with detergent & water (as

recommended by our clinic) - so how do you guys keep your little ones

smelling fresh?

Thank you..... =o]

I would check about what you use in the band besides alcohol (which

most providers recommend). Some say no to nearly everything else.

One concern is that if your kiddo has sensitive skin other products

can irritate the skin. Some stink is pretty normal (unfortunately).

See if you can find 91% rubbing alchohol - we used that to clean the foam and then let it dry in the sun.

I also used & Freshness release baby powder - the lightest little sprinkle and then I would rub it around - made it smell nice and absorbed the stink.
