Guest guest
Hi all, Moller is okay, but typing is difficult for him. I spoke to him on the phone several days ago when he was rested and he sounded good. Terri may not be online these days but I speak to her at least weekly and again yesterday. Even with her fancy lift, she strained a muscle getting off the john ) where she could not use the sling. They are hanging in there. Guest guest
Greetings Valarie! You noted: > Sorry to get everyone confused ... As if this were a NEW state for us? I think not! > ... but =jbf= usually posts everyday and sometimes > several a day, so I was concerned about him. I work from my home, so staying connected and checking on messages is fairly easy for me. But for the week around Christmas I had vacation and family at my home. This is wonderful, until you realize that I become overwhelmed by all the confusion around me. I suffer from the OPCA form of this .. and making sense of lots of activity that occurs around me - visual or auditory - is becoming more and more difficult. It makes me quite irritable and tired. It was a wonderful time with family, but there is a definite price to be paid. I collapse for a few days. > I also emailed to his private email about a computer > issue and he has not replied as of yet. I will try to do so, but it may be a few days before I catch up with everything. Regards, =jbf= B. Fisher

Guest guest
Greetings back to you too, =jbf-= You just answered one of my BIG questions, my husband and I cooked dinner for 11 (he did the most, I just cannot anymore) but I did NOT sleep well for 5 days after. So this is the question that I was pondering asking to the group, you answered and thank you. I told my son and d-i-l when they were the first to arrive that I as EXHAUSTED then. I made it too, and enjoyed all being here BUT I paid for it also. Also, many on here have talked about slurring speech and BOTH of my children have told me I do this, BUT they thought it was I was taking too many meds. I only take ultram as I stated previously and I don't hear myself slurring at all. Do we not hear ourselves slurring? Both of these issues concern me. Thanks for any help here. Guest guest
Greetings Valarie! Glad to hear your holiday gathering went so well, and sorry it was so draining. This appears to be part of the disorder. Most people comment about this. It also appears to be more of an issue with the cerebellar form (OPCA). You noted: > Also, many on here have talked about slurring speech > and BOTH of my children have told me I do this, BUT > they thought it was I was taking too many meds. I only > take ultram as I stated previously ... Medication can do this, but with just Ultram, I doubt that is the case. > ... and I don't hear myself slurring at all. Do we > not hear ourselves slurring? Depends. IF you have training in speech you may notice it. If you speak for a living (answering phones, etc), you may notice it. Remember that if things change gradually we tend not to notice the change. This is true for any body change. I notice the slurring. But I have a Speech & Theatre background (lots of stage work in school .. and college classes). I also do customer support. I spend a lot of time talking. That exercise helps keep my speech clear. But even I have problems with slurring. I notice it, especially when tired or stressed. In this instance your children probably are a better judge of speech issues than you are. But it is not something to worry about. You may want to see a speech therapist (have your doctor write a prescription). Or find a book in the library on speech (looking for vocal exercises .. tongue twisters). Anything that forces you to speak and work on enunciation. Regards, =jbf= B. Guest guest
Hi , I too talk a lot with my 2 day a week job, switchboard operator, for Target. I believe when my children have commented on my slurring it was late in the day so it may just be that I was tired. I saw my neuro yesterday and he wants me and husband to decide where we want to go......St. Louis, Nashville, or Houston. They have tried many times to get thru to Nashville as that's where we want to go but got no connection with them. So this am I will get on the phone for Nashville. He doesn't think I have MSA but not experienced with it either. I just read on a previous post about MUCH weakness when sick, I do that, I slid off the bed onto the floor when sick and it took me FOREVER to get up. Also, I asked him about the alien limb with MSA as my left hand and arm is atrophying, but he said usually the hand or arms will do things that the body is unable to stop like jerking and pointing and such (mine doesn't do that). Do many of you have an alien limb? can you give me a site to go read about OPCA? Many thanks for your post back to me. Hugs, Valarie
Guest guest
Dear Valarie: My mother's symptoms, years ago, began with her right side--she was dragging it with her as though she had no control over it. Her husband also noticed that she had lost the natural arm-swinging movement that most people do unconsciously when walking--her right arm did not naturally swing. It is now her right arm that doesn't cooperate and causes her so much pain. She doesn't have uncontrollable movements like jerking or pointing, as your doctor describes; rather, her arm is very weak and sometimes goes rigid. She was diagnosed w/Parkinson's originally, but now some (Houston, California) think she has MSA--though her own doc in Nevada doesn't know what to think. Best, Re: where is ? Guest guest
Greetings Valarie! You wondered about alien limb. As your doctor noted, this is when it starts to do things completely out of your control. It is not a sense that it is completely different in feeling and perception. That is something that is not unusual with MSA. But alien limb would indicate another type of disorder. Hope that you are able to find a center that will help you identify your situation and learn to live with it. You can read more about OPCA and MSA at the following two sites: http://www.emedicine.com/neuro/topic282.htm http://www.emedicine.com/neuro/topic671.htm Hope this helps. Regards, =jbf= B. Guest guest
Hi... Does anyone know how is doing? Unless I have missed posts, I don't recall reading ones from her lately. She was just one of the ones who was having surgery when I was just starting. I start my nutrition classes this Friday!!!! I have missed the cut- off, so I only have to do the 8 weeks. I am so excited about finally getting to another step in this journey. Patty Riverside
Guest guest
Patty, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I knew someone would ask sooner than later. I spoke to weeks ago and she is doing fine. At this time in her life, she has taken what she felt she needed from this group and feels like she no longer needs this group. She said she apologizes because this might sound rude but she attends a monthly support group meeting in her area as well as a weekly meeting. She has other friends she is hanging out and she is doing a lot more things now since the surgery. I am not sure if she is still reading as she told me that she does not spend a lot of time on the computer anymore because of her knew life now. I was hurt at first because I know that others are coming behind us and I feel like we should be here to help them along just as someone did for us but that is where life gets a little tricky. We have freedom to come and go as we please and I can't hold that against anyone. I miss her because we went through our process together. Maybe she will peek in and write to us and let us know how she is doing. I think Sandi lives near her and might know how she is doing. I hope that answered your question.
