Hi,

He may just need some time to get used to sleeping in his band. How is

he napping? Could he be teething and that is why he's waking up? I

hope he starts sleeping through the night soon. Keep us posted.

I can sympathize with your situation. My son,Logan, has had his band

for 2 weeks, and has stopped sleeping through the night also. He used

to just get up once, around 3 am to nurse, now it's every 2 1/2

hours. I am completely exhausted, and hoping it will go back the way

it used to be. Problem is that he's also teething, so I think it's a

combination of both. This too shall pass! Good Luck - Jaclin

Good news!!!! Hit night 3 and things are back to normal (fingers crossed). slept through the night last night and has been napping well as before.

Yesterday was his first real day outside in the heat. No problems other than the "smell". I cleaned the band with 90% alcohol but it still has an odor. Any ideas???? I was wondering if it pays to take it off every 30 mins or so just to dry it off???

Keep up the good work on cleaning the band. I can assure you that the smell does get better with time. We had to get a new band and I forgot how bad they smelled the first few days! Comparing the two bands, I could definitely tell that the smell had diminished in the first one. Now that we've been in the second band a couple of weeks the smell has diminished in that one as well.

That's GREAT news! :-) After you scrub it w/alcohol you could dry it

under a fan or out in the sun. That seems to help w/the smell.

Keep us posted on his progress.

My orthotist told us to use Wintergreen Alcohol. It has a wintergreen scent (obviously). He said it cuts down on the smell. That was his advice for a STARband. I'm not sure what you have!

I think it diminishes because I couldn't believe how bad the new one smelled in comparison to the old one. We went straight from one band to another so we didn't have a chance to "forget" what it smelled like :>)

Can I ask if the sleepwalking is concurrent with the move? And he

is gonna move again?

I do know one thing, they need/require/thrive on stability.

As far as echoalia, the boy I was taking care of had it, he

still does in 6th grade, I taught him to use it properly, we had a “paper”

route in school, and I would greet the people and he learned to “mimick”

me. The speech teacher was not happy with it, but the boy did use it in regular

situations he knew when to use it, but was unable to form the thought/concern

for doing it on his own. I don’t that what I did was good/bad but I do

know he was so happy seeing people react to him and the staff/student

population LOVED him for his socialgrowth.

Your son is young, continue to work with him and foster proper

social acceptance.

God bless you and your family

Subject: Night time waking

Hi everyone,This is my first post so please be

patient with me! I have a 4 year old grandson who has not been formally

diagnosed yet but all his teachers and therapists are positive he has

autism, should be diagnosed in the next few weeks. He has been recieving speech

and occupational therapy since he was two and has been in the early childhood

classes at the public school since he was three. He's making lots of progress

in some areas, not so much in others. He has echoalia and can repeat lots of

dialog from his favorite videos but won't answer you if you ask him his name.

Just repeats the question. We had him sleeping in his own bed although we have

to lay down with him till he goes to sleep, which can take anywhere from fifteen

minutes to hours! But once asleep he stayed asleep....till now. He has all of a

sudden started getting up in the middle of the night and wandering around the

house...most times ending up crawling in his mom's bed and staying there for

the rest of the night.(They are currently living with my husband and I). Has

anyone else had this kind of problem and if so what can we do to keep him in

his room?? I worry about his safety as he likes to open drawers and squeeze in

behind the livingroom furniture, where the electric cords are at. My daughter is

a heavy sleeper and she doesn't hear him when he gets up. I wake up to the

pitter patter of his feet running around the kitchen and livingroom! They will

be moving out soon so I'm really concerned that he could get hurt. Any

suggestions? Sorry this is so long,I just thought I should give you a little

background on Ethan,I'll try not to be so long winded in the future!

Thanks,Debbie

He is actually my grandson...his mom and sister have lived with us since October of last year so this is the only home he's known. His mom and dad are putting an offer in on a house so he may not be in my care much longer. So,no it didn't start right after a move and yes he thrives with stability. I also have used the echoalia to his benefit ,his teacher was pleasantly surprised when they were doing the weather report and Ethan said"I see a sun". I had been using flash cards with him over the summer and had been saying I see a whatever was in the picture and he would repeat it. His mom works so I spend alot of time with him and I try to make it as educational and fun as I can. I taught him how to use the computer so he could play educational games which he masters quickly. He's extremely bright, his teachers and therapists say he'll make a

good engineer some day! lol But I do worry about this new night time waking and what he might get into. His parents have put in an offer on a house and I'm sooooo worried about what it's going to do to him to have to leave what he considers home and all the routines we have going, like when I put him to bed I have to say the same thing every night or he will keep saying it over and over till I comply! I love him so much,he's my little buddy and has the sweetest disposition(except during meltdowns!) and I hate to say it but his parents are still in denial and don't push for his therapies and don't follow through with what the occupational therapist asks them to do at home, there's no doubt they love him but they just are very pro active. My sister in law told me I should butt out and let them figure it out for themselves but won't Ethan be the one who pays the price for this??? Anyway,I got off track...I just don't have anyone to talk to

about this and this feels good!! Thank you so much for listening and for any advice you may offer. I notice I didn't succeed at being less long winded...sorry!

Hi Debbie,

Welcome to the group! My used to wake at night and it was not only dangerous but the lack of sleep really made him grumpy and reduced the progress he was making. We have tried many things over the years so I have a few suggestions you may want to try. For epsom salt baths work when he seems to be overly stressed out. We dissolve about 1 cup of epsom salts in hot water and add it to his bath. If your grandson likes to soak in the tub for awhile this may help him. You do have to make sure he doesn't drink a lot of it as it is a natural laxative but if he drinks his bath water ( did) some won't hurt him. We also give the time release form of Melatonin the regular kind doesn't last all night and he wakes around 2am but the time release form helps him sleep all night. The other thing we did was turn the door handle around on his door so the lock is on the outside not

inside. This way we could lock him in his room but open it easily. This only worked until he learned to open the lock with a hanger (watching us open the bathroom doors he like to lock when no one was in the room). It is scary when they get up at night and we all do so much better with a good nights sleep. Kellie

Gwen,I've been concerned about the new house Ethan's parents are looking at because it's by HWY 59,one of the busiest in the country, so your suggestions about the alarms is priceless...since my daughter sleeps so soundly it would take something loud to wake her up to Ethan's night time prowling. He too will probably eventually figure out how to defeat them...if he sees you do something one time, especially if it's something you DON'T want him to do,he figures it out! We have door knob covers on our door knobs to the rooms we don't want him in and so far they have kept him out but they won't work for keeping him in. You have to keep one side free or it won't work but we don't have anything on his bedroom door. You guys are soooo helpful on here, thank you so much!

From: Gwen Hebert <gwenhebert@...>Subject: RE: Night time waking Date: Saturday, August 29, 2009, 3:40 PM

Debbie: A cheap way to know when he is leaving his room is to go to Wal-Mart and buy an alarm system for his door. There not expensive and there's a switch on top to turn it on and off. When you have it on and the door opens a loud noise goes off. We had these on our front and back doors until my son got smart. He started pulling a chair up to the door and turning the alarm off before he went outside. Eventually we had to get broadview to come and put an alarm system in our home. It's not to keep the burglar's out it's to keep my son in. My son is almost 7 and he still sleeps with us. Every time we tried breaking him something would happen. He had rsv twice, pneumonia, and he is asthmatic. We gave up. We ended up getting a king size bed for now..... I hope this helped. Gwen
