Guest guest
A friend was an objector to getting the Hep B shot for herself (a volunteer firefighter in CT) when her town instituted a requirement and took away her fire entry tag. She successfully fought it with help from the ACLU in drafting her protest letter. ACLU takes few cases, but hers was unusual. She's not a X'n Sci't or anything. Simple Protestant. But the vaccines violated her beliefs (which are that vaccines don't work or make sense). She had refused any and all shots for herself since the age of majority. She did not have to state her beliefs to win. Having the ACLU name to mention didn't hurt, though. When I get pushed by the schools, as I expect I will in a year or two, my line will be: Our religion (Judaism) requires everyone to bend rules for the sick to avoid injury. (Vaccination is inappropriate if you are sick at time of administration.) My son is chronically sick (or else he would be NT and not allergic to everything in sight). For a NT child, one could similarly spin it as: familial susceptibility to illness and allergic reactions and so on ... Guest guest
The Booster shot/vaccination exemption is being taken very serious by my and most school districts. Especially since there have been cases of some of these childhood diseases as recently as last year (whooping cough, tetanus, etc.) My school district has turned down a stronger version of the religious exemption letter Cheryl posted a few weeks ago, the standard " medically detrimental letter " by Dr. Hift, and now are potentially preparing to turn down a diagnosis of immuno - something - encephalopo - something. Preparing for your exemption should begin before your child is school age. We have had titers done that show my son totally immune to Measle/Mumps/Rubella (but didn't get the DPT/Polio titers done). We are in hurry up mode because of this. I have drafted a more religious version of my religious exemption letter. The supposed opinion of the state is that you should be able to quote the passages that support your exemption to display a " bona fide " religion. Well, I consider myself formally quoted (Halleluliah) and will see where tommorrow brings. Anne Q. Guest guest
No, they did not turn me down in writing. All rejections were verbal. I haven't heard back on my last attempt. I'll email you privately, Cheryl, to get the info. You never know. Guest guest
Ut oh, I was missing part of this thread.....Cheryl, did you get titers done to show immunity (assuming such would be the case of course)....I submitted my documentation to my son's new school district earlier this week and so far, no news is good news. Guest guest
Jo Anne, Yes, actually I did get his titers check for measles at my doctor's request. He was immune so this satisifed her. But, I did not submit that to my school. I just submitted his religious exemption and they accepted it. Anne: Personnally, I would tell them that I want their rejections in writing. I find that whenever I ask for anything in writing, their tune usually changes quite rapidly. I believe they are violating your right to freedom of religion. I would add that you need to have their response reviewed by your attorney. Guest guest
Cheryl, The reason stated in my denial was that my letter did not display the existence of a " bona fide " religious request. I too had the MMR titers checked (rubiola being the only one of interest) and my son was shown to be immune. My problems were from both the DPT and Polio (my titers weren't done at the same time). Even though he may be immune to DPT/Polio (had my titer blood test done today), I wanted either a medical or religious exemption. This was mainly due to the fact that potentially the immunity to the DPT could be challenged annually. Again, I only am going by my sons' current health department placement. Anne P.S. - I didn't get turned down on my last religious exemption request.
