Aha. This is an interesting one. I live with my Ma right now, for the past

few years. We started out more as roomies, since she is a widow, and I am

divorced. This evolved (I am an R.N.) because she developed dementia and

could no longer drive, or plan her meals, so I quit my job last year to care

for her. It was either that, or come home to a burned down house (she was

microwaving things, for really long times....), or put her in some sort of

care (and she was still well enough to resist that!). Anyhow, she is a

small woman with a giant sweet tooth. There is always some sort of candy,

cookies, ice cream, you name it, in the house. When we go shopping those

are the only things she wants, and she is becoming more childlike by the

moment. The only way I can avoid this would be to leave her home with

someone while I shop (she would not get her exercise/fresh air) or what I

do, which is remind her that there are lots of those things at home already.

Bet you are getting sorry you asked this question, right? Well here comes

the thing... I can eat any of those things any time I want on WW. It would

be a trade off of course. 1) do I want to feel really great? or 2) do I

want to nourish my body and have a good loss this week?

The years between the 150 or so pound losses in the mid 1980's and this trip

at WW, I maintained my weight at around 230 - 250, by eating whatever I

wanted when I was hungry, and trying to stop when I got full, and exercising

at least 5 times a week. I had decided that was an okay weight for me, and

I did not want to give up any fattening foods any more. After being that

far over 300 pounds, I felt thin. I learned in that 15 year period that

candy, sweets, ice cream, real fatty meats, etc. caused me to feel draggy,

heartburn, all kinds of nasty stuff. When I rejoined WW this past year it

was because I am determined to go to goal. Part of that for me, is living

in the world. It is full of choices that don't lead me in the right

direction. For me it comes down to not what is in the house (I do have a

car after all) but the foods that are in the world. I get to decide what I

eat. I vote for healthy. MOST of the time. When those things call me

really loud for several days/weeks, I know it is time to bank some points

and have something. I can tell already that I am going to have some candy

on Halloween. But it is talking to me now. I decided to wait for the day,

have a couple of my favorites, move on... If I start getting it now it

might be a month long problem. Moms stuff doesn't bother me, don't ask me

why, I don't know. But if I got bags of halloween candy it would. So I

will buy some on sale Oct 31, eat a bit, and give out the rest.

Question of the Day--Tuesday 9-17

What is the most tempting food in your house right now? Who brought it into

the house? How are you dealing with it?

My Answer:

Since I do the grocery shopping I just don't buy those trigger foods in the

first place, howwever, the grocery store has a Starbucks in it. That is

definately my trigger, so I work very hard to avoid it or plan on a small

mocha frappuccino.

What about you??

My Answer:

Chips! Right now there are BBQ corn chips in my cupboard and I put them there

right next to my Baked Tostitos and a bag of pretzels. I am dealing with the

chips with the pretzels. I found butter-flavor low-fat pretzels made by Snyders

that are divine so I have been reaching for them instead of the fatty corn

chips!

They're the same points as most other pretzels......2 pts/1 oz serving. They

really taste rich and are excellentfor dipping in salsa as they are waffle

shaped.
