Actually, I have the Enfamil diaper bag sitting right here. And it in fact

does NOT have the Enfamily name on the outside. It is a mint green color

with Rabbit on it. And it says Rabbit. On the inside it does

say Enfamil...Congratulations. But who is going to be looking on the inside

of your diaper bag. I got the Similac bag from the hospital, and I got the

enfamil bag from my pediatrician. I used the formula in the early days when

had a hard time latching and wouldn't eat. But we got through it.

Anyway, I can't remember if the Similac one has the nameon the outside.

Our hospital gives out a 'starter-bag' when you deliver. They have ones for BF and ones for FF, but the BF bag includes a small sample can of Similac--incase you need to supplement. But that just makes it easier and more available to do so! I did like the fact that they had a few BM stoage bottles and a cooler pouch to store EBM in. That was cool

Well, the diaper bag is just a portable advertisement for them too You

can donate the formula to women's shelters or to places that take care of

drug-addicted babies, or the foster care system.

I agree the CD would be nice but it comes with some info in how classical

music can raise IQ. But so can breastfeeding. Just another attempt to

replicate what BF does.

As far as where you are getting it from, I wonder if someone input your due

date as 2001 instead of 2000. And yes, dr offices, peds, maternity clothing

shops, etc sell your name.

I would give the formula to a food bank and not worry about the diaper bag, it will have the formula name emblazoned on it and you would be a walking ad for them.

Beckie, The diaper bag is basically just full of Enfamil products. We got one like it for Similac. We didn't even give them a coupon-they just gave us one when we left the hospital. The diaper bag is nothing special-I just use mine that I picked out myself.As for the formula, why not donate it to a social service agency or church in your area ? I used to work for an agency that had an emergency supply closet for parents to use if the need ever arose-and they had formula, diapers, clothing etc. It was like only a once in a while thing, so it truly helped those who really needed it. Just an idea :-)

From reading the material, I never felt like the formula company was pressuring me to do anything-everywhere on there-it said breastmilk is best. Since I had soo much trouble breastfeeding, there were many times that I wanted to just give up, but the formula company sending me stuff didn't influence that decision at all. There are soo many women who could really use it-that breastfeeding just isn't possible for. If you want to complain, by all means send the letter, but it would be great if you could help someone out by donating the formula if you didn't need/want to use it yourself.I hope I haven't stepped on any toes, I surely didn't mean to. :-)

I feel quite differently about the intentions of formula companies. Formula is freely available in many places, it does not need to be sent to the homes of new breastfeeding mothers. Getting a gift pack of formula from the hospital gives many women the impression that formula is as good as breastmilk, which sadly is not true. Breastmilk is best and formula is sub-standard but it doesn't say that on the label. I am not at all tolerant of formula company practices but many don't agree with my stance. I understand donating it but just don't personally agree. I am glad you expressed your viewpoint, I really enjoy hearing different sides of things.

doesn't for the another. I have always felt natural weening was the

way...well my first couldn't wait to be weaned and did it herself when weeks

old! (that is when i thanked those formula companies), the second wanted

absolutely nothing to do with formula, and the third will take whats given,

but prefers mommy the most. At three she calls it the delicious milk. Funny

when they start to be able to say, Mom can I nurse now please?

The bag that I got was from one of the formula manufacturers and I recently found it in the closet and started looking through it. It had a pamphlet on bfing for the first three months and it had all kinds of wierd advice that would make anyone think that they were not producing enough milk. They said that you should pump to see how much milk you produce and if it was below a certain # of ounces, then you should supplement that # of ounces with formula. They kept calling it a "milk shortage". It was truly a bizarre thing to read. I don't know how they get away with lying like like that.

I think the responses to this post are a good example of how effective the formula makers advertising is. They give you free samples "just in case" because they want to put that thread of doubt in your mind. They want you to supplement because if you do it is more likely that you will have supply problems. They give away the free manual breast pumps and storage bottles because they want you to think that you have to pump. Those pumps they give are worthless and we all know giving bottles too early can lead to nipple confusion. The little bag with the cooler and ice pack can make you feel like you shouldn't nurse in public but should give a bottle instead. Formula companies do not want you to succeed in breastfeeding. If everyone did it would put them out of business. I see those bags all over the place being used by nursing and bottle feeding mothers alike. They make me cringe. The formula companies put lots of money into these ad campaigns so they must be getting something out of it. They aren't giving you free stuff just to be nice. They have a reason for it- every mother who doesn't breastfeed puts more money in their pockets. I'm not saying there is never a need for formula. I'm just making a point about formula companies real purpose in handing out all that free stuff.

Yep, the little bears are Ross' logo and Rabbit is Enfamil's. And trust me, most moms know that when they see another mom with those bags, that they got it from a formula company. As soon as I realized that I was advertising for Ross, it went bye-bye. And mine was the 'BF' bag with the storage bottles, gel packs and *yes* a sample can of powder.

These companies *KNOW* that by providing you with samples, you are more likely to try that brand, buy that brand and stick with that brand as long as there are no adverse reactions. And studies have shown that a mom who starts out BF, and switches to FF is more likely to stay on formula for the first year. A mom who starts out FF is more likely to switch to milk before the year is up. Therefore they have a vested interest in getting you to switch.

Honestly, there are millions of dollars in their budgets for marketing research. The moms who check BF only on the reply cards are more likely to get samples. Why send product (or a lot of product) to moms who indicate that they will FF from the beginning. Maybe a few small samples to get their brand in your home, but not the size coupons that BF moms get. They target BF moms because that is the untapped market.

There are regional differences for these examples just as there are regional differences for all advertising. But that is what it is, advertising.

And the babies lose.

I found mine after BF was well established and started to reread it and I even doubted myself then. She isn't sleeping thru, is she getting enough? She is staring at my dinner, maybe I need to supplement??

There are some subtle, and some not so subtle messages in those books about how, why, and when to supplement. Like phrasing things as "when you supp...use our brand" not *IF* you supp. And making you doubt your ability to provide milk. Like this pumping thing. Some moms, in fact quite a few on this list, cannot pump a drop, but are feeding a baby just fine.

I never got anything from the formula companies besides formula which I gave to someone who couldn't breastfeed because of a breast reduction (someone I knew)

I really dislike the tactics that formula companies use to get people to use their crap!

My "free" unopened sample of similac is like a trophy for me! I didn't even open it and am soooo proud! I'm going to bring in a few of the extra collection bottles to work to keep on hand, the diaper bag is a toy for my 3.5 yo and the insert is being used to carry mm to the babysitters while I'm at work.

I also signed up for all the formula freebies and will give them to the women's shelter and a young family here at work who are having a hard time making ends meet. The mom can't bf b/c she got very sick after delivery with an infection and was hospialized for weeks. I figured, Hey, if they WANT to give it away, I'll take it and give it to those who need it.

ummm a lot better off? There is rarely a true reason to ff a baby, many women are willing to wet nurse. I wish didn't have such severe food allergies or else I'd just ask her sitter to nurse her instead of fighting her to take a bottle/cup/sippy/dropper/you name it, if it aint real she wont take it.
