Protein shake mixes vary so widely that it's hard to say, " Get this one and I KNOW you'll like it! " While I might like brands A, B, & C, another listmate might hate those and only like brands D, E, & F. You might go and try all six and find you only like A & E! You really have to taste them. Personally, if I'm going to use shakes for drinking, I tend to prefer whey or egg protein. Soy protein (to me) has a weird texture and and off taste. I will say though, that blends that have soy in them taste OK to me. Personally, I like the Atkins shake mixes. (They're pricey, I'll tell you that.) I've found though that if I make them according to the directions on the can, they're GROSS! So I've modified the " recipe " to my liking. I also like Optiumum Nutrition's 100% whey proteins. They're less expensive, and I've found that you can make them by following the " recipe " , and they don't taste weird to me. I've tried the Carb Solutions ready-to-drink shakes, and I think they're terrible. They have this great taste initially, but then (to me) there's this horribly bitter aftertaste that you just can't get out of your mouth! I don't know about the powdered version. Vitacost.com has a nice selection of powders. And even better, they have a $4.95 flat-rate shipping charge. (Their prices seem a bit better than Netrition's prices.) You can also buy the Carb Solutions stuff at Wal-Mart for a great price. I think someone else said there's some other kind of protein powder sold there that's pretty cheap and tastes pretty good. Consider paying a ittle extra in the beginning to order from a local place that has a great return policy. GNC, for example, will give you your money back if you don't like it. (We know how high their prices are, but IMO that's better than ordering from someplace offline and either having to pay to send it back OR hating it and just throwing it away.) It's up to you though. You'll have to figure out what you like the best and go with it. Sorry if this wasn't too helpful! -- in Indy (262.5)253.5/217/150 3/26/
Guest guest
Junelle, my favorite are the whey protein shakes. There are also soy protein shakes and some people use some sort of dried egg protein also. I hear that the soy has a real strong flavor and some don't care for it. You can buy them most places, even Wal-Mart. I purchase vanilla and then flavor it with any number of things for variety including extracts, DaVinci sugar free syrups, diet sodas, sometimes I put some cream in it and that makes it really rich. I hope this helps. Cindy in TX 249/228.5/165 __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Junelle... this question seems to pop up on the list so often, it's almost as predictable as death and taxes! LoL!!! ;-) There's no real " answer " for you... it's SUCH a matter of personal preference. I love the Optimum Nutrition Complete Protein Diet shakes - they have 1carb/scoop. I use 2 scoops, 5 ice cubes and 15oz of *COLD* water in a blender for a few min. This makes up a 32oz drink although you can certainly decrease the amout of ice/water for a smaller and thicker shake. For best results, make sure the ice is crushed and the water is c'c'c'cold! I've tried other shakes (Atkins, Keto, etc) and thought they were just OK. I really ENJOY the Optimum Nutrition shakes especially since they contain all sorts of vitamins and minerals (including L-Glutamine to help with the cravings). If you go out to Low Carb Connoissuer (http://www.lowcarbconnoissuer.com) they have product reviews for all sorts of things... including the different shakes. That should help you out. But there really is no " answer " as to which one is best. -Marlena 214.5/164.4/150 > > I am getting ready to purchase protein shakes but haven't got a clue >about > > them. Guest guest
Hello.. There is a shake out there put out by the company EAS and it is called EAS/Advant, or something like that. But be careful.. Buy the one with 2 carbs, as they have some that are 25 carbs and higher. I am having a problem finding the 2 carbs one, but they do a great job for a sweet craving, that I may order them directly from the company, if I cannot find them. Guest guest
, I have made them with water, milk and lactose free milk. The Dr. assistant said the gas was probably from the Lap and the nutritionist says it is probably from the milk products. Any suggestions? thank you. Guest guest
actually, you have other choices, not just the one. have you tried the various samples from vitalady.com? Many of us have found that there's a shake or two that will work with water with no problem. Pam in Niceville Re: protein shakes ---I hear some people suggest NOT making the shakes with milk and others say it's fine. I always make mine with milk. Well, I was using orange juice but it was so good I was having 2 a day and my stomache started burning when I'd drink or eat ANYTHING. So, I'm back to skim milk. I tried it with water, but it just wasn't good enough for me to force myself to drink it. With milk I love it. Is this not advisable? If not, I'll just have to not have it at all. Guest guest
---Thanks, . I don't know if I could do that many shakes a day, and I know I couldn't use just water. I love milk, and have never had a problem drinking it. I can't imagine giving it up completely. My doc says if I can tolerate it I'm fine. I disagree about the milk being for babies. They give babies whole milk, and I haven't drank that in about 10 years, but I do love my skim milk. Thanks for your post, I appreciate replies, even when I don't agree completely. I don't mean to come across as a snot, I just don't feel it's necessary to give it up. I've lost 155 this past year, I'm happy with that. My doc's happy. Guest guest
Lynn - You can get used to using water instead of milk. The reason most of us don't use milk is because it adds a lot of extra sugar to the drink. Yes, it is a natural sugar, but still sugar. And many of us are lactose intolerant. I would say if there really isn't any other way to get you to drink them, then stick with the milk. If your weight loss stalls down the road, you may try cutting back on the milk, or using water with a little bit of non-dairy creamer instead. Take care. Guest guest
Hi Deb, I am also a nurse, and this is what my gastroenterologist orders for the prep for the very reason that it DOES a good job and people will be compliant. There are very few people that are compliant with a gallon of golytely. Actually since the RNY I think I will need the Fleets phospho plus dynamite for my next prep prior to a colonoscopy! man! everyone told me I would have diarrhea. Never having been blessed with children, this is the closes I can come to thinking I am possibly giving birth once a week! LOL Phyllis Re: Re: protein shakes Well Phyllis, that's all well and good, but as a nurse who's been on the end of cleaning and helping with a colonoscopy when someone refuses the prep, they can't always see what they need to see. Maybe if you've had rny surgery, then I can perhaps see, but the prep does make a big difference if they can do the test or not.
