Our grandson also has a right microtic ear and also has no opening ear canal. His left ear is normal and he has been tested on that ear and has normal hearing. Mandy oops..ok, its grandma..i was thinking mandy patinkin ( an entertainer-singer, who is a guy..) the prognosis could be really good for kade. science has come a long way. check out www.earsurgery.com it's dr brent's website. this group is incredibly helpful and friendly. even to grandparents! uncle jack

You've come to the right place. Does your grandson have unilateral or bilateral Microtia? Does he have Atresia as well? (Atresia refers to the closure of the ear canal, Microtia is the underdeveloped outer ear). Guest guest
Hi and thank you for the welcome I guess our grandson has AtresiaMicrotia as his little ear canal is closed. We do not know as yet whether he has an ear canal or not. My son & wife took him to the surgeon who told them he had Microtia and that he wanted to see him again in 12 months time. He mentioned a hearing aid and also a plastic ear, they were not impressed with that idea. I told my son that I looked up Microtia on the internet and found out quite a bit about it. Apparently there are 3 or 4 children right here in Newcastle Australia with it as well. What is the difference between unilateral or bilateral Microtia? Guest guest
Hi Mandy and welcome to the friendliest place on the WWW! Unilateral microtia is when it affects only one ear, bilateral is both ears. It sounds like maybe they need to see another doctor! Guest guest
Hi Mandy, My name is and I live in Brisbane with my son Lachie. Lachie has Grade 3 Unilateral (left) Microtia Atresia. There are many more people here in Australia with Microtia. I started a support group about a year and a half ago for Australians and so far there is 23 members and that is only the ones who have access to the internet. Where is your grandson located? Maybe I can give you some names of other surgeons that they could possibly see if they are interested. I am quite interested in asking you about the mention of the hearing aid. Can you see an opening into the ear? What is his hearing like in his good ear? They won't give Lachie a hearing aid or canalplasty (make a canal) because he has one good ear and I have found this with other members also. I would love to hear more. Any questions please feel free to email me beccyb@... or you can call me 0439 300 242 Take care! Guest guest
Hello Jack Where are you from. Did the Doctor who saw your grandchild tell you same thing about a plastic ear? Mandy new york, NY (yes, THAT one). he told us to: " lop off the microtic ear and put in a plastic one and stop feeling sorry for ourselves and guilty over it, and if it falls off in a playgound, so what, because he's never seen a reconstruction that didnt leak....am I right, nurse???" we told him to go to...well... we were nice about it.. jack
