What's the failed twin theory?

There was some discussion on this list a while ago that Microtia/Atresia accompanied a failed twin. i.e. the pregnancy started out with twins, and one twin didn't develop, the other had Microtia/Atresia. There were some anecdotal points, but I haven't heard of any real studies, or stats supporting this theory.

Thanks Dianne, I'm not quite sure how it makes me feel...kind of sad, actually. I know it's just a theory, but since this is still so new to me I'm still trying to find a "reason." I guess I'm mainly dealing with guilt here...I had the flu at about week 8 with a fever that reached 101. I know I'll never know what caused this, but I guess as parents we are always trying to find answers.

Funnily enough Christie, I also had a high fever of 102 when I was 8

weeks and I still think this had something to do with it although I will never

now for certain.

(((Christie))) Hugs. I know this is hard. Brayden is 18 months and I still

wonder what and why somedays. I did have a confirmed failed twin pregnancy

with my second son so I wonder if the same happen with my pregnancy

with Brayden??? or was it because I was too stressed, or or or. The list

goes on and we may never know. We have to try to put it behind us and take

the time/energy we are spending on worring about why and use it to help our

little ones now. My younger brother is now 22. He was born with a birth

defect and my mother says she still wonders why? What? So I suppose it

will never go away but we need to just keep looking forward.

Take Care

you'll feel better when its all behind you. and one day soon, it WILL be, like at about age 7.

then you'll feel as wonderful as dianne does when YOU will help somebody who needs it!

this group is the BEST example of why we dont look back..

were too busy looking forward at all of YOUR beautiful kids!

I have just started recieving info from the Birth Defects Registry. With the

first mail, there was a very extensive survey about everything I was doing

before I fell pregnant, (ie: where I was living, what employment I was in,

medications I was taking before I fell pregnant etc), while I was pregnant,

all about both parents family history etc. etc. etc. It was fascinating. I

hope with all the feedback they receive, they may be able to come up with

something!
