Guest guest
Wow, that's pretty good Kim. Sam (2/10/00) is just starting to take 2 meals a day lol. He's been taking 1 meal since around 5 mos, but he just doesn't want to eat twice a day consistently yet. He just started taking bites of cracker last week - that was exciting! Guest guest
when did most of you start your childern on solids? --I tried giving ds cereal (which, btw, I'll skip completely next time) at about 5 1/2 mos but he really didn't like it or taking any pureed food off the spoon. We waited a bit and didn't really even push it much more, just tried every now and then but finally realized that he'd eat soft food off his tray at mealtimes with us, doing it himself. He's very independent now and I'm thinking back that he must have been then too!! Fawn Drake 27mos edd 03-05-
Guest guest
I started Abby around 6 months. She eats a little and enjoys the different tastes and textures. She usually gets at least one meal a day sometimes two depending on if she wakes up early in the morning. -Jen ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ http://www.TheElliotts.org I believe that what is right is not always popular and what is popular is not always right. Guest guest
My first was 4 months old, my pediatrician told me he wasn't gaining fast enough and, being a first time mom, I foolishly complied thinking I was starving my baby. It turns out he didn't gain any faster getting solids. With my 2nd, I took the opportunity to change pediatricians to the associate in my peds office, I'd heard great things about him. He was very supportive of breastfeeding, would tell me at the 4 month appointment I could begin to introduce solids/juice if I wanted to, but he stressed that the baby was doing just great and I didn't have to add anything if I didn't want. My current ped is the 3rd doctor in the same office. The one we'd been using for the other children is also a cardiologist and very busy, I'd seen this associate a few times when we had to call on our peds day off, so I just put him down as the primary. It turns out with Lucas' heart problem that the other guy is involved anyway, LOL. Our current doctor is also very supportive, even with Lucas' VERY slow gain at first, he never once suggested supplementing. I will wait the full 6 months with Lucas for sure, and then he will only get tastes unless he is really clamoring for more, I'd like to get him to the first year with breastmilk as his main source of nutrition. Guest guest
, I started my daughter at 6 months, even though she wasn't showing signs of readiness. I was expecting to start my son later but he showed all the signs of readiness early. Some signs to look for: sitting unassisted, grabbing for food, teeth, pincer grasp, no tongue thrust (pushing food out of mouth with tongue), and not being satisfied with a toy or other mouthable at food time. First did baby food from jars, second is finger food only. Amy Lynnmother to 1-25-98 and 2-10-00Want great toys? Guest guest
, it is healthier for him I think I'll have to disagree here on what I've learned about infant's digestive systems and the components of most infant cereals.....Did your dr recommend this already at 8weeks old? I know my mother, grandmother etc. think/say that it's fine to start cereal early (some at birth, can you believe it?) but recent research says otherwise. I'd be very careful and watch for symptoms that it's upsetting his digestive system since it's really not developed enough for it yet. I know there are many others here who have lots of medical knowledge on the subject so maybe I'm not totally correct, but I'd sure be wary of beginning it this soon..... Take care! Guest guest
, also 2/10/00, wants to eat anytime she sees someone else is eating. Somedays she has big meals, other days she has snacks, it may be as low as twice a day and up to five times per day. Right now she's teething so she really wants to chew. Guest guest
when did most of you start your childern on solids? i just had to start my son on cereal, he is 2 months old, b/c he is taking over 40oz of formula a day (plus whatever he takes from me at night, hopefully that balance will change soon! lol) and it just wasn't good for him to be taking in so much liquid. now he still eats on the same time schedule, but i replaced one feeding with cereal and he is gobbling it right up (which tells me he is ready for it anyway) i would have liked to have waited till at least 4 months, but with the sheer amount of formula he takes, it is healthier for him jenn j
Guest guest
yup, my doc recommended it, b/c apparently that formula is bad for the heart if consumption goes over 35-40 oz, and dor takes close to 50 oz a day without the cereal feeding. i know that recent research says otherwise, however, i was started on it at 3 weeks, and have no food allergies or digestive problems, and hwile i know that is not indicative of how my son will react to it, chances are fairly well he will be ifne. i am more ocncerned what that amount of formlua can do to his heart (it can act like cholesterol to a point to my understanding of this) and i would prefer him to take one feeding of cereal than takethe chance with the formula. i just started on reglan (thanks for all the info eveyrone) and hopefully can establish some sort of milk supply, so i can cut out this feeding, however, it wont do him any harm. jenn j -----Original Message-----From: Fawnf12@... Guest guest
I started my first dd at 5 mos. She was not very interested so we would just give her little tastes of the food now and then until she decided she was ready. We started Mikayla at 3.5 months because she was grabbing at our food and we needed to give her meds in applesauce. She has severe reflux and one of the ways to help with keeping the food in the tummy is to weigh it down with tiny bits of rice cereal. I make sure that I nurse her before and after and it has not affected my supply. I felt wierd giving her solids so early, but it has helped her keep down the bm and she is soooo much happier now. We are not going to start a big variety of food until she is 6 months. Mom to 12/10/98 and Mikayla 6/22/00when did most of you start your childern on solids? Guest guest
When I first started feeding my daughter solids around 6 months and she became constipated I cut out all solids and went back to strictly breastfeeding for about three days. It cleared it right up and then I slowly introduced solids again. Sometimes they just aren't quite ready. Blithe Question? my baby is 6months old and has been constipated for the last two weeks off and on, the first time i noticed I feed him some prunes and some water, I thought i might had been the corn I gave him so i stoped feeding him that...and now he is still constipated does anyone have any idea what it could be ?? Guest guest
I never knew that. I knew that corn was not easily digested, even in adults. With Amy it seems to come out in the same form that it went in. LOL! I did ask my Dr. about it and she said that it was o.k. for her still. Raisins seem to be the same for her. Guest guest
I've had the same reaction with my dd to bananas and squash. I suggest reducing the quantity of solids you are giving and increasing (consequentially) the volume of bm. Skip all juice and water in the meantime and offer ebm in the cup instead. Guest guest
My ds (first child), only tasted solids until after he was 9 months old, then he would eat about 2 tablespoons a day until a year. Anytime he was cutting a new tooth or had the sniffles he would stop solids completely. Your child will be fine without solids until a year and beyond as long as he continues to nurse frequently (say 6-8 times in 24 hours.) If your child turns down baby food but is interested in eating, try finger foods. If your child simply isn't interested, keep waiting, he may be signaling that he has allergies that won't manifest if he waits longer to start other foods. Guest guest
I tried at about 6 months, but Mikayla would not take to them very well at all. she is almost 11 months, and still does not eat them really well. She nurses every 1 1/2 hours all day, and every 3 at night. I offer her solids, like for breakfast I offer her rice ceral, she just turns away from it, wont eat anything for breakfast. Lunch she eats a coupld of bites, then tunrs away, dinner same thing, every once in a great while she will eatabout 5 bites. I always nurse her right before she eats, I feel at this point, my milk is more important then solids anyway. Guest guest
my dd is 14 mos and is just now starting to accept solids. I didn't bf but I was weary of putting her on real milk because of her refusal to eat-she just prfered the bottle. But after a month or so of mostly just milk-she realized the foor fills her up more-lol!!! Now she eats at least one meal a day(baby oatmeal with fruit) andI have cut her bottles back to just 2 per day (before nap and bed) I give her juice during the day, but she still refuses to eat more than once. She is doing great though, she gained 1.8lbs in a week!
