Guest guest
Four months ago when we had to make the decision to have a helmet consultation or not my husband and I opted not to. Our doctor told us that as long as we were okay with it there was no cause for concern. Well, we were okay with it. We were confident that his head would get considerably better on it's own through growth.......we figured he has a lot of growing to do. Not to mention it has shaped out quite a bit since he was three months old (when we first noticed the flatness of his left side). Since then our families won't seem to let it go. They talk about his head every time we're together. I'm starting to feel insecure about the decision we've made. His head is misshaped yes, but is slightly noticable to others if they notice it at all (I see it very clear because I'm his mom). Is anyone going through something similar? I wish I knew what was best....can anyone offer advice?
Guest guest
we banded, so I don't have a similar story. however can you get your baby reevaluated/measured to confirm how much correction you've gotten? maybe if you can demonstrate to your family that it is significantly better that would help. or if you find it hasn't corrected as much as you hope that might make you reconsider banding. if measuring isn't an option, do you have good photos of the " before " and " current " to show how much correction he's gotten? (you should take some now if you haven't yet) Also have you told them it bugs you to discuss it all the time? i know that every night when I take sydney's band off i try and analyze her head. sometimes it doesn't look that great because i'm so focused on it :-) when I look at her measurement changes, and her before photos i know its getting much better and that on certain days it is just hard for me to be objective. good luck, christine mom to sydney/ 6.5 mo/ starband 5-31-06 > > Four months ago when we had to make the decision to have a helmet > consultation or not my husband and I opted not to. Guest guest
Hello. I just wanted to let you know that you STILL have time to have him banded to get the plagio corrected. He is not too old. Most places will band at least up to about 18 months old, and some up to 24 mo. You are obviously upset about his head shape and what it may be in the future. I would go to a specialist as soon as you can and look at your options. He can still get great correction! MANY babies are treated after 10 mo, many even after 12 mo. Also, you may want to go on the site for older plagio kids/and kids with unresolved plagio. They may also be able to give you some insight. Their link should be in the Links section I believe... I don't have it right now. Good luck! Guest guest
My mother and sister did the same thing. It really is your decision and what you think is best for your child. You are the ones who love him and will do what you think is right. Let your family know you do not appreciate their comments. I had to do that with my family. I am still waiting to see a specialist but my son's head is rounding out. From what I have read, if it is a mild case of plagio, it can resolve itself but some flatness may still remain. There are alot of medical journal articles online and at the library. Research and consult another doctor if you like. Do what will make you feel confident in your decision. Good Luck > > Four months ago when we had to make the decision to have a helmet > consultation or not my husband and I opted not to. He also has tort and has been in physical therapy since 4 months old. I decided to wait it out and was told by his Ped that it would round out. It did round out a lot but I still noticed it. Anyway, Since he was 11 mos old and the window of time was closing I decided to just go ahead and get him banded. Honestly I would rather be safe than sorry. He's been banded for 2 1/2 weeks and we have already seen improvement. It's really up to you but if it even bothers you a little bit I would say go for the band. Before he had it I was really against it but now that we went ahead I'm so glad we did! Good luck with your decision.
Guest guest
Have they mentioned how long your child will have to wear the band? Guest guest
Hi, The window of opportunity to correct plagio isn't a big one. If you do plan on banding, NOW is the time to do it. You can't wait and change your mind in a year it'll be too late. Your son could still receive awesome correction from an active band. My baby wasn't banded until she was almost 11.5 months old. She received over 90% correction. Good luck making your decision, let us know what you decide. > > Four months ago when we had to make the decision to have a helmet > consultation or not my husband and I opted not to. Guest guest
Hi there and welcome to the group. Maybe you can take your son for an evaluation and see how severe his plagio is and then go from there. You need to make this decision, not your family. We did band my daughter and my family was against it and didn't think it was needed, but for my husband and I that was the right decision.
