I'm glad to hear everything worked out OK for your son.. I have been a big

believer in that the testing that is available to us is not infallable..Thank

God your instincts served you.

JoAnne how frightening! I know shrimp was one of the foods on the rast test

and both my kids came up negative though combined they are allergic to

everything else. And I certainly agree with you that we should not trust

allergy and sensitivity testing the way some of us do because not everything

shows up. We don't eat shellfish in my house and from what I understand they

are very severe like peanut allergies. Dr. Hift prescribed a epi pen a

number of years ago for which has expired so I will have to beg our

good friend Carly for a new prescription. Epi pens and benadryl are good to

keep in the house. Thank you for posting your experience. It serves as a

good reminder to all of us. How did ph act through all of this? Good

for you for staying so calm! I hope you sleep tonight and I'm glad he is

okay. Would you keep us posted on what the ped says?

Listmates, I must share my evening....I brought home some left over shrimp

this evening and two of my children, including ph (the "relevant" child

for this list) expressed a willingness to try it. I was delighted

in the opportunity for them to try new foods. My daughter hated it

and ate a little. ph put a little piece in his mouth and spit

it out. Shortly thereafter (thankfully we were all sitting around

eating dinner so I could see such) ph's face started looking weird

and then he had a big allergic reaction. His left cheek had a

lot of raised hivish-looking bumps, his face started to get puffy

and his lips started to swell up. I was thinking, oh no, anaphylactic

shock might be setting in. I took out my epi pen (which I never used)

and check down his throat. His throat looked open so I tried to stay

calm and I gave him some Benadryl. I still decided I'm not risking

this and I took him to the ER and then immediately checked him, he looked

pretty scary. His oxygenation was good and we were then placed in

a less urgent mode. He got examined and they gave him some more Benadryl

(he could take more than I gave him) and I'm instructed to continue the

Benadryl for 2 days, see our ped, keep an eye, etc. Well it was very

scary and I literally thank God that he didn't eat the shrimp, but spit

it right out. Now the additional thing I need all of you to understand

is ph's comprehensive allergy testing did not show this allergy.

That's what doubly scary here. ph does have allergies but none

of manifested themselves this scarily. I don't think we can really

rely on testing...

I figured this would be a very appropriate thing to share with this

list.

Oh, how scary that must have been for you. Poor kid, how did he handle going to the ER?

Shrimp is highly allergic, I think it's the iodine. I have eaten shrimp for years and I had a reaction only once, where I felt my mouth and lips tingly and my throat close up a little. So maybe he is not allergic to shrimp, but something in it? I don't know, but you need to watch out if he ever needs any sort of testing which includes iodine.

Wow, scarey story...glad ph is O.K. Thanks for sharing. I agree that we

always have to be " on alert " . Let us know how he's doing. He might be

allergic to all shellfish-be careful.

Oh, he was great going to the ER. It's an adventure for kids!

Jess told him she got candy once from a nurse so of course he kept asking

everyone for candy the entire time!

I see your point about the iodine and how scary is that!

ph handled it very well. He's a love bug, he can't help himself. He did at

one point announce his mouth felt better and I knew that was a good sign. Oh,

another thing to share: I had a Benadryl in the house that was for

allergies/congestion. I think I had purchased it for my older boy who also

has environmental allergies and then gets very congested. Well I was going to

use that one in the middle of the night for ph but the mommie guilts made me

call the pharmacy to check and she said no no, I needed the " regular " Benadryl

just for allergies. So I got that one. I plan to always have all

this stuff in! I'll keep everyone posted if I learn anything!

I could totally relate, since I am allergic to shellfish and I learned

it the hard way. I blow up like the elephant woman and need to be rushed

to the emergency room. It sounds like ph has a pretty strong

allergy, I can tell you, I can't even touch it, so be careful.

This must have been very scary for you. The good thing is he didn't

like it so it won't be like the pizza issue we all face with our kids.

It's unfortunate we can't rely on these test.

Glad to hear you got everything under control pretty quickly.

I'm picturing something along the lines of those Willie Wonka kids that got pretty round after eating some candy if I remember correctly? Glad you didn't need the epi-pen, Joanne. "The Pizza Issue"- How true. I made the s pizza crust, with Classico Tomato Basil and Toffutti Mozzerella for last night. He wouldn't eat it and pointed me to the garbage can with it. About an hour later, I'm in my office and he comes in with a small triangular slice that he plucked out of the garbage can, obviously to get permission to eat it. The obsession continues.... So sorry to hear of your scary event. Shellfish allergies can be alarming. Thanks for sharing...(i don't even own an epi pen...that'll be changing).
