It is something that you really don't want to ever think about happening but know that it will. I feel the same way about my little dog. When dies, I will be totally unable to function. You little cat sounds like he was very very very special to you and you loved him very much. I know he loved you very much too. I'm so sorry. Please take care and good luck with your surgery.
