Guest guest
Dear Terri, You hair loss sounds pretty typical to me. I had my WLS just a few weeks before yours and I'm experiencing the hair loss too. I bought the generic brand of Nioxin Shampoo at Sally's Beauty Supply (Nutri-Ox System) and I take a Hair, Skin and Nails vitamin each day. Others recommend upping your protein intake. If you're currently drinking 2-3 protein shakes a day, consider drinking 4-5 shakes a day. My hair is still coming out quite a bit and I'm hoping it will slow down soon. Good luck and God bless you richly. Love, Trace in Va. Beach, VA Dr. Schechner, Va. Guest guest
Dear L., Probably. It seems to me that protein is the " key " to our success. Makes good sense and if better health and success means one or two more shakes then I say, so be it! I have really, really thick hair. In fact, when I washed my hair before surgery and didn't blow dry it with the hair dryer, it was still be wet (underneath at the neck) for at least a day or two. Now my hair feels like it's been professionally thinned at a salon. It feels strange to wash my hair and not have a heavy weight on my shoulders when it's wet. I really don't mind because I have so much but if this continues or if my hair starts to really thin out at the part or on top ... well then, that would not be a good thing. Consider buying the Nutri-Ox System shampoo at Sally's Discount Beauty Supply stores. The woman working there told me that the Nutri-Ox is the 'generic' for Nioxin and reasonably priced too! I paid (I think) about $8 for the shampoo and maybe $9 for the scalp treatment. When I use it faithfully (I wash my hair with it and then follow with my Pantene shampoo for manageability) and take my Hair, Skin and Nails vitamin and drink my protein, my hair loss IS reduced. I got out of my routine during the holidays -- not drinking my shakes faithfully, not drinking my water faithfully and my hair and my skin really took a beating. My skin was drier than the dust bowl and my hair fell out more. I looked pasty too. Not enough protein. Sure, I was eating more 'real' food but we all know we really can't absorb enough protein and vites from food alone. If we could, this surgery wouldn't be successful, would it...? I'm back to my routine and in just a two weeks my skin looks better and isn't flaking at all. Here's hoping that my hair loss will slow down soon. Guest guest
Well, I've heard that the 3-7 month hair loss is a function of anesthesia at surgery, so it's possible that the anesthesia at childbirth would cause the same reaction. Guest guest
I was pondering why I never noticed it in all my OTHER surgeries. I'm wondering if I had the hairloss, but never knew to associate it with surgery 4 months earlier? That and being younger, having lots of long hair---just didn't make much impression? Guest guest
I don't think I ever lost hair before being a hair dresser I would notice when I started to lose more than normal . Guest guest
I had surgery on 9-16-02 and so far, knock on wood, haven't had any noticeable hair loss. I drink 4 to 5 protein shakes a day (120-150 grams). I also have been using Nioxin shampoo and conditioner for years. Just a suggestion, try upping your protein grams and of course drink lots of water. in Sacramento, CA -- age 52 Lap RNY 9-16-02 Starting weight 2-12-02... 380 (BMI 71.8) Pre-op weight on 9-16-02... 316 Current weight as of 1-21-03... 248 (BMI 46.8) Total weight loss... -132 5'1 " -- Goal 130 " Beauty is soul deep. Guest guest
Are you taking biotin? Use Nioxin shampoo. And make sure you're getting enough protein. Sometimes you just gotta live through it. It will pass in a couple of months. Hang in there. Guest guest
Hi . Welcome to the group. Congrats on your loss. Several people have mentioned Biotin. I haven't tried it yet. I'm still preop. But I'm planning to start taking it before the surgery and then after, just in case. Hair loss Hello everyone, I am new to the group. I had my surg. August, 2005 and lost a little over 100 lbs. I am doing well but I have a problem with my hair thinning out to nothing. I have tried several things to help stop this or slow it down a bit. Does anyone have anything that they have tried and works or have heard works? Thanks for any suggestions H
Guest guest
Technically the 18 months is the " honeymoon period " where you're going to lose weight ALMOST no matter what you do. I was told once that you'd lose X amount in the first six months then 1/2X in the next six months then 1/4X in the last six months of this period. You certainly can still lose weight after that 18 months but it won't be as easy. More importantly you have to maintain the weight loss, exercise and healthy eating habits for, well, the rest of your life. So 18 months sounds like a nice cut off and all but I like to think of these 18 months as a start not an end. Two hour workouts? Damn! I only work out for an hour but it's every weekday. Actually it's probably a bit longer since I'm moving between machines and drinking some water through it too. Still, two hours is massive. Way to go! I've been thinking of having my neighbor train me Tai-Kwan-Do. He's like a fifth degree black belt or something. I'm not sure he will train me since I told him only sissies kick. LMAO!!
