It's intensely personal and one that I don't think I could ever make for myself. I've known many for whom weight loss surgery hasn't worked. One friend has had 3 different surgeries, the last to repair damage done during the first 2 and they had to remove lengths of intestine. She is still a large lady. A friend of mine in NC had surgery at 317 lbs as a late teen/early 20 something. She lost a total of 17 lbs and the only thing she was able to keep down was ice cream. The sad thing is, she doesn't even like ice cream. I know these are somewhat extreme examples, but just be aware that they are out there and anyone considering surgery needs to weigh all the possible outcomes before making that decision. Even says she has to work at it to maintain. Anyway, the reason you may lose weight is because your digestive system has been shortened so you don't absorb as many calories nor, ironically enough, as much nutrition. Now have partial scheduled for Oct 16 with preop on 12th, when I will learn more what to expect and be able to ask surgeon questions. My cancer is >1.1 cm (per report) and nuclear grade 3 (which is why they put me on fast track for surgery. Then I am supposed to have radiation. I been scared, but that passed, now just dealing with bouts of the blues. Ride my horse when I can (theraputic). Even get to go on trip with my horsey friend to the coast which has been planned for a year, the weekend before my surgery (if my first grandchild doesn't decide to be born that weekend). Wish me the best for good outcome, clean margins and clean lyump nodes (only sentinel nodes planned) Hope so as I am right handed and know of woment who have had problem with their arms and side lyump nodes were taken. It sounds like you have a good support system and attitude to take you through this! Was lucky in that the nodes were clear, though 6 were taken for the sentinel node biopsy. I tell everyone, that if you are going to get breast cancer get it on your non dominent side!!!!!!! I was given the news of lobular cancer in situ/ductal hyperplasia left breast and lobular atypia rt breast on that same day 9/25/06. This was after I had breast reduction 9/18/06 ... at my 1 week post op visit. Of course they had done pathology on my breast tissue they had removed and that is what it showed. He had already contacted a surgeon, who I see 10/10.. and who I hope will be aggressive diagnostically. We are ofcourse uncertain exactly where on my breast any of the tissue came from..so that makes it difficult. I did have a biopsy 4 years ago onthat left breast that they then said was " pre cancerous " .. take watch and see approach...mentioned Tamoxifen, but decided I didn't need it then. Hmm/// of course second guessing that now. From what I havebeen reading and hearing from ladies on here, sounds like bilateral mastectomy may be my best shot..lobular does not show up readily on mammos... and esp if nodes show up clear at this point. Hard to think about when I look at my " new breasts " after reduction.. and am so happy with the " small and perkiness " of them...BUT certainly not worth playing a game with cancer over. I am just so lucky I had the reduction and this was found in what appears right now to be early stages from random tissue taken during the reduction. I, too, am going through so many emotions... one minute I am resolute in thinking positive, being aggressive diagnostically and going on with a bilateral mastectomy... and the next I am in tears, wishing and hoping I can " keep " these " new breasts " .. " just a year, God? " ... How stupid I know it is, but the way I feel at times. Very blue... and I think it is because the first week I was in total shock.. it really wasn't happening to " me'..... the second week it has become " real " to me and the last few days I realize this really is happening to me... if you know what I mean? Becoming " real " that I will have a bilateral mastectomy.... and not that I have heard that fromthe Dr yet.. but from others who had ben diagnosed with the same as I .. such as a friend of mine and they told her bilateral mast...she didn't . Opted to enter a studyat Cleveland Clinic where she is taking Tamoxifen/ having blood work every 6 mon and then a mammo yearly From what I have read and learned and stories I have read and learned the last few weeks about lobular cancer..I don't think I could opt for that choice myself. Anyway, I am 52 years old, married for 28 years and we have 3 daughters.. 2 married, the other engaged and will be married next Sept 2. My middle daughter is also pregnant.. with twins. When is your daughter due? is " due " in Jan, but Dr has already said to plan for delivery around 36 weeks with the twins..so that would be around Christmas... hopefully all will go well until then. Isn't it such a " kicker " that this is happening now? It is so exciting that she is in the last months... and I am so happyand excited about the babies... but then I am so overwhelmed with the feelings I am dealing with...it is just hard. And I hate that she is having to " deal " with this right now too. I am usually a very happy go lucky and positive person ..I sure don't sound like it right now, do I? lol!! I know how fortunate I am this was found, in what appears right now to be early stage...so I need to quit my belly aching, I know~ I think once I see the Dr and we have a " plan " , I think it will be easier to focus on the positives and getting on with it.. I had a lumpectomy and sentinal lymph node biopsy (all clear) The surgery was day surgery, went home that night, no problems with my arm, movement, etc. I also did the fast track, because of the invasive grade, went right on to A/C chemo - 4 treatments and then 33 radiation treatments. I'm now on Arimidex for 5 years. I'm 48, 4 kids, trying to get back to my " normal " life - if there is such a thing with 4 kids! Best of luck and welcome - good luck! Guest guest Posted October 6, 2006 Report Share Posted October 6, 2006 -I am also a new member( 53 yr. old who still works outside of the home) and I had surgery (lumpectomy) on 8/30/06 - had my first visit with the onc. on 9/28/06 - doing a test to see whether or not have to have chemo and next appt. with onc. is 10/23/06 - may have to go straight to radiation.
