Guest guest
I am just wondering about how long I can expect to be off of work after a lap BDP/DS. My surgery is a week from Wednesday. I know that the doc's can give an estimate, but I was hoping some post-ops could give me some real life data. Thanks! in Illinois

I would say about 2 weeks maybe 2 weeks and a few days if you have a sedentary job. If you have a more active job I would imagine you will need more time. Also, as I am sure you already know...everyone heals differently! I have two small kids and had to get up to help them w/daily stuff. I only have five steps up and down in my house and I would say on day 8 Post-Op I was up and down a few times. On day 7 I showered myself. I hope this info. is helpful. Best of Luck to you!! Guest guest
Robin, Did you have open or lap? I am also a transcriptionist, working from home for the most part, but also a few days at a local hospital. Time off from the hospital is no big deal, but with the home stuff, I don't get paid if I don't work. I am still waiting for my consult with Dr. A., but will be having open, as he doesn't do the lap (as far as I know). I had a hysterectomy last year, and was able to work, just a few hours per day, after 2-3 weeks, and worked up quickly from that. So, I'm hoping to be back at work after 3 weeks max. Is this possible with open? Thanks, Dawna
Guest guest
I just want to thank everyone for the great responses to my question about time off for a lap DS. I told my boss today that she may see me in 4 weeks (my disability starts one week before my surgery on 2/28 because I have to go to Altanta for pre-admission testing) or she may not see me for several weeks after that. She was very sweet and said that I should take my time and not push it. She also said that she is really proud of me for making such a tough decision. I felt really blessed. Thanks again, everyone! in Illinois
Guest guest
, I had a very uneventful surgery and recovery. I returned to work 3 weeks after surgery (I am an administrator for a law firm). My job is a lot of desk work, and a lot of easy walking, and a lot of stress. The first week back I tended to go home after about 8 hours (as opposed to my normal 10). By the second week back, I was doing normal hours, but was pretty darned tired when I got home! I could have gone back at 2 weeks if it was necessary, and was actually doing some conference calls and email at 2 weeks from home. Guest guest
I think that everyone's return to work is an individual thing. you need to assess your job requirements and demands, then assess yourself and how you are feeling post op, knowing that how you feel one day may not be how you feel the next. Hopefully you are always progressing forwards, energy level, adaption to post-op eating, lifestyle changes, bathroom needs, etc., however there are days in any post op course where you just might feel like you took a step backwards instead of forward. I returned to work full time, 18 days post op, i simply did meds and treatments on my ward, avoided pontentially assaultive clients, finally last night started to do some direct hands on personal care with select patients. I am aware that my battery packs are low, by the end of the night, I am tired, bone weary the last couple of nights. A night's sleep is welcomed and very needed at the end of my shift. There is nothing wrong with taking all the time you feel you can afford to or have to take, to ensure a continued recovery and healing for yourself. i am grateful however for the distraction of work, it gives my mind something other than thinking about me to do-chuckle deb
