I wrote to Wonsiewicz at McGraw Hill about the omission in

their Obstetric & Gynecology book and here's what I heard back (see

below). I've included the letter/email I wrote below as well.

Feel free to use what I've written if you are ever inspired to in

your communications with the " powers that be " as you help advocate

for better care for women with fibroids.

Thank you for your email. I am passing this on to the editors for

consideration.

CURRENT Obstetric & Gynecological Diagnosis & Treatment

Mr Wonsiewicz,

I recently came across a copy of McGraw Hill's 9th Edition CURRENT

Obstetric & Gynecological Diagnosis & Treatment at a local bookstore.

I looked through the index and didn't see a single mention of the

uterine artery embolization procedure. I feel that this is a glaring

omission and could result in substandard care for women.

Uterine Artery Embolization, also referred to as UAE, is a procedure

which has several applications -- stop hemorrhaging after child

birth, control bleeding during uterine surgeries and for the

treatment of uterine fibroids. UAE as a treatment for uterine

fibroids is the most recent application which affords many women with

another uterine saving procedure besides myomectomy. The recovery

time for UAE is much shorter than for myomectomy or hysterectomy

which is another advantage of this procedure. UAE is generally

performed by an interventional radiologist, Ob/Gyn are partners in

the treatment of the patient but typically they do not have the

training to do the procedure directly since it is a specialty

procedure.

Here are some links to sites where you can learn more about the

procedure in use for treatment of fibroids.

I urge you to include it in your next edition as it is critical that

more information get out to the medical community about UAE. Women

are talking and learning about this procedure and the ob/gyn

community needs to be equally informed.

Thank you for your attention to this matter,

Ann
