I am reading a wonderful book called _His Brother's Keeper: A Story

from the Edge of Medicine_ by Weiner and wanted to share

one bit. It is advice about how to maintain hope in the face of

adversity and really embodies the spirit of Mitoldies.

" Be a thriver, not just a survivor; be an active participant in your

treatment; investigate every possible avenue; push the medical

system to its limit; and then, no matter what the outcome, you will

not have been defeated and will have lived life as fully (if not

more so) than most. "

Well, I love the book, but I always love a well-told medical story.

I saw the author on Book TV a month or two back and knew I had to

read it. The family story alone is compelling--one brother racing

against time to save another brother from the ravages of ALS--but

there are also all kinds of interesting scientific tidbits thrown in

and quite a bit about gene therapy (in understandable language). A

fascinating look in the back door of scientific research. There is

also an interesting twist when the author's mother develops another

serious neurological disorder. The two stories intertwine.

Yes - this is a good motto for Mitoldies. Shall we put it on the main page?

Thanks Barbara for this wonderful post.
