Guest guest
We went to see the specialist today for a follow up appt and our 6 mos old will have to have a helmet. We tried repo for 2 mos with some success, but he recommends that we proceed with the helmet to avoid any further potential growth in the forehead area. We can't get in to get the casting for another week so with the fitting two weeks later she won't be able to start wearing it for another month! I am afraid that means we will miss out on any growth spurts and it will mean a longer time in the helmet. Has anyone started the band at 7 mos and seen significant improvement early? The doc seems to think maybe 4 mos? i am worried about how the whole sleeping situation will be. Any suggestions on what to anticipate? Its to have found this site and to know that others are going through the same situation. Amy Black Nashville, TN Molly - 6 mos
Guest guest
Hi Amy, try and relax. It is very common for it to take several weeks to a month from the Rx to actually get the helmet. the earlier the better is true because young babies grow the most, but you are still starting at a good age. Your baby should do fine. My daughter started with her band at 5 mo, but most babies start later. 7 mo is still on the early side because unfortunately some peds are still saying " it will round out on its own " . be glad your doc is supportive of banding and enjoy your little one's head for the next few weeks. do what you can to keep her off her head. sleeping is hard, but you can minimize time in car seat or put a blanket under one shoulder to encourage her head to stay off the flat spot & all the other repo tips you can fit in. you can't really predict when any particular baby will grow. my daughter had a big spurt right around 5 mo, then it was little by little until another spurt at around 9 mo - which surprised her ortho because we got some extra correction at the end. take care. -christine mom to sydney/ 10.5 mo/ starband grad 10-06 > > We went to see the specialist today for a follow up appt and our 6 mos > old will have to have a helmet. Guest guest
My dd was scanned and got her band at 6 mo. We saw wonderful improvement and alot of growth - she is now 11 mo. and her growth has really slowed down. I think 7 mo. is OK - better than 12 mo!!! JEN Mommy to 4...and 1 more!!!! Guest guest
Hello. My Daughter didn't start wearing her band until she was 7mo, 1wk and she still got great correction in just 11 weeks. It all just depends on the severity of the plagio and also how much growth they have while banded. My Daughter had 14mm of asymmetry and corrected down to just 4mm. There have been MANY other babies on here who were also banded after 7 mo and got great correction in just 3-4 mo. Good luck and keep us updated. Guest guest
--Hi Amy, That is still not too late to start the helmet. Jenna got her helmet at 6 mos and we had really good correction that first month, but between 7 and 8 mos the progress was amazing. She now has this beautiful round head we have just a little spot that still needs to come out but hopefully by Christmas she will be finished. But you are still in the window of opportunity for good correction. Good luck and keep us posted on the progress. Guest guest
Amy - My daughter was on the exact same schedule as you. She was diagnosed at 6 months and started wearing her DOC band at 7 months. That was 2.5 months ago and she has made great progress. She was SEVERE when she started (at 101% cephalix index and some assymetry as well). She now is at like 95% with no assymetry (basically she went from 5 standard deviations to 3 standard deviations in the 2.5 month period). We were just looking at her photos with the ortho this morning and there is SIGNIFICANT improvement. She started on her second band today and we anticipate that she will need to wear it for about 2 months, putting her at 4-5 month total treatment time. Are you getting a DOC band? One thing to note is that there is a difference between how long treatment is and how long they can wear their bands (this was one thing that confused me at the beginning). They told me that she would be in the band for 10-12 weeks at her age (7 months). This was correct, however, she will need to be treated for longer than that (hence the second band). Soooo, don't worry. 7 months is definately not too late to start and you will get great results. Good luck! Kerily (and Keira, DOC banded on 9/13) _________________________________________________________________ Get the latest Windows Live Messenger 8.1 Beta version.
