Guest guest
Hey y'all. Here's an idea. If you have a craft store or WalMart with a craft section , look for that sticker maker thingie. I think the brand is Xylon or something. Several mention it is hard finding stickers for boys.. maybe with the sticker maker you could look for boys magazines or inexpensive picture books and make your own stickers! Or look in the scrapbooking section of EBAY! Re: decorating The stickers still peel right off with the mod podge and any residue left behind comes right off with alcohol. Guest guest
I just ordered some stickers online from www.stickersgalore.com for Wyatt's helmet. I couldn't find much at our 's craft store. We did a construction theme, across the front it says "under construction" and on the side there are stickers that say "hard hat area" and stickers with nails, screws, saws, measuring tapes, etc. The other stickers I got were a dog theme, with pug stickers (we have a pug), dog bones, dog paws, and misc dog stickers with dog houses and sayings, and we got a police theme since my husband is a police officer, with police car stickers, traffic cones, radar guns, night sticks, and sayings...anyway just thought I would share those ideas since they are different than sports. Guest guest
I did a "what boys are made of" theme which I found at 's. It was really cute with bugs, scooters, balls, etc. Some other cute ones I saw were , Fire Engines, sports (of course!), tools, aquarium theme, playground theme, etc. There are a lot in the Me and My Big Idea brand. I also saw quite a few in the Sandylion brand. Good luck. Guest guest
Some of you might think this is offensive, so if you do, I apologize in advance - but the back of my son's STARband says "MY BROTHER DID IT" in some cute rub on decals that I found at the scrapbook store where we live. This is funny to us because he has two older brothers, and people are constantly asking us what happened to his head. Of course we explain (if asked!) that his brother didn't really put him in the helmet - but it's kind of fun to make people wonder. Okay, I have a sick sense of humor, I admit it! <lka_236@...> wrote: I did a "what boys are made of" theme which I found at 's. Guest guest
we have only 2 wks behind us but we found the clearback stickers everyone recommends stuck great, we had the cheap ones from dollar tree and they stuck without even starting to peel for over a week, we only took them off b/c they were fading (not sure if it is the cheap stickers or that is an issue in general) and had lines that were completely without color from being banged. But we had also planned to change out stickers every 1-2 wks anyway. Next we opted to paint using the water based acrylic they recommend. We did 2 layers of blue and then a layer of modge podge to seel it and b/c they said you can usually peel it off when done if you do that. We painted it Friday night and I took it off today. It was already nicking within a couple hrs and by this morning stickers were peeling off (same stickers we previously used on the unpainted band) and taking the paint with them and there was a gouge in the paint on his forehead. So next time I think a 2nd layer of mod podge over the stickers maybe??? I want it to last at least a week but want to be able to remove it and change colors too. We took it off today and put just the stickers back on. I also read on the boards on the CT site that ppl have decoupaged tissue paper on and it was also removable but held up better than acrylic paint. Basically a layer of mod podge then the tissue paper smoothed on then another layer or 2 or more (never tried it myself) of mod podge is how I decoupage on glass so assume it is the same. I am going to try that next as the neat thing of that is you can get patterned tissue paper. I am going to try camo probably. I was going to have it airbrushed but I like to be crafty and so I like changing it often so decided to hold off on that. Plus I want something completely non toxic and fume free. Guest guest
Hi, I used a primer on the helmet before I painted. There was one spot I missed and the paint definitely didn't stick as well on that spot. I would highly recommend a primer (I got mine at Home Depot by the spray paint). I taped off the foam edges with painters tape and stuffed an old towel on the inside and sprayed away. When it was dry, I painted the entire helmet with acrylic craft paint (available at 's). I alternated one coat of paint and then one coat of acrylic (also available at 's). I had a total of three coats of pain and three coats of acrylic. It made it super- durable and it barely chipped (it actually only chipped a little where it was shaved a little at one of the adjustments). After the six coats of paint/acrylic, I added stickers and put three more coats of acylic over the top (allowing each coat to dry before adding the next). It looked great!!! P.S. I used a " satin " finish acrylic so it wasn't super-shiny. I liked the very slight sheen better than a high-gloss finish. You can check out my daughter, , in the files section...purple helmet with " Bug " on the front. Good luck! Guest guest
We've used stickers on my son's helmet and I love it! The stickers usually stay on 1-2 weeks, sometimes more. We like changing up the theme every couple of weeks; it keeps it fun. If you want it to stay on longer you'd probably have to put some kind of clear coating over it- I put his name on the front in stickers and covered them with clear nail polish and it has stayed put for over 2 months. The stickers usually do stay on well while sleeping, although as he rolls around in bed sometimes the edges get pulled up. The paper-backed stickers are harder to get off than the clear backed ones but I use GooGone on it and that takes the sticky residue right off- it hasn't been a problem. I've bought most of my stickers at s in the scrapbooking area. Good luck and have fun with the decorating! , mom to , 7 1/2 months Brachy, in Hanger helmet for 3 1/2 months <jssckrnz@...> wrote: My daughter Brooklyn was cast for her Starband today…what a traumatic 30 min L! Guest guest
Another decorating idea we've heard and plan to use for our daughter is using BOWS. We are going to put a piece of velcro on her band and put a velcro piece on the back of lots of different bows then just stick one on to match her outfit...easy and very cute I think! > > > My daughter Brooklyn was cast for her Starband today…what a > traumatic 30 min L! Guest guest
I would make sure the bows can't come off and become choking hazards. And if you do undo them at night and naps, then consider the sheets on your daughter's crib so the band doesn't stick in certain places. I've seen the bows and they are cute...I'd just be careful with them too. lisa PS: We used stickers and they didn't come off. I changed them about every week. The paper ones leave more residue and are harder to take off than the clear BUT I was still able to make the band look decent and cute. I cleaned and scrubbed the residue off with a dry paper towell and alcohol (alternated). I did that until I got the band clean enough to apply new stickers without it looking bad. > > > > > > My daughter Brooklyn was cast for her Starband today…what a > > traumatic 30 min L! Guest guest
We had Hanger - but also did the plain pink. I wanted to do rhinestones - but then realized she was rolling around so much I was afraid they would pop off and she could choke on them. We used alot of differnt stickers - changing them as they wore or started to look shabby. The vellum and clear stickers work the best - the paper stickers absorb water and fall off fairly quickly - we used dragonfly ones but had to replace then frequently. We did not put any sealer over the stickers - I found it wasn't needed and it made switching the stickers easier. HTH! Only one has come off, at the nap of the neck because it kindof crinkeled when I put it on. You can see it under our plagio babies K for Keenan. Guest guest
Thank you to everyone who replied. It looks like I am going to just have to abandon the spray bottle idea. However, if anyone doesn't plan to decorate their band it is a great way to get the inside really clean and it still dries very quickly. I am just going to have to slow down and be more careful with the outside of the band now. However, slowing down is hard with twins! , we go to Ginny. She is great! We have also seen the others. They all seem to be very knowledgeable and helpful. We really like the Oakbrook location and my sister just moved 1/2 hr. away in Batavia, so that has been a big help to our travel time and expense.
