Maggie-

Don't be alarmed. Dr. Cohen just increased my IV dose to 6 grams a day

which is twice the max. dose. When you are severely depleted it has to be

given in extremely high doses to drive it back into the cells.

Maggie,

I have seen it higher. My daughter takes 6 a day so I wouldn't be concerned

about this dose. I'd recommend that you increase it slowly, but other than

that, it should be fine. I know there are other mito patients who take even

more than this.

carnitor dosage

Hi,

Last week I had finally had my biopsy. The doctor put me on a

higher dosage of carnitor (the amount being 6x what I had been

taking!) I am supposed to take 6 -(330mg tablets) three times a day.

What I'm wondering is -- if there's anyone else that's taking this

high a dosage (I realize it's weight dependent). My pharmacist was

alarmed when I filled the new order -- and said he's never seen this

high of a dosage and wondered if it was correct (it's possible he's

never seen a prescribed dosage in ANY amount, so I'm not sure how

concerned I should be about this comment).

Anyone?

Alice,

This would mean that I'm taking 18 pills a day. You've seen this?

Thanks.

Whoops.. I read that wrong. I'm sorry. I don't know about that dose. Could

the doctor have written it wrong? Is anyone taking 5940 mg. of Carnitor a day?

Thanks; that helps to know.

I've just never seen anyone here mention such a huge dose.

I hope you see a big increase in your energy!

9 pills a day (3 g) is the standard max recommended in the PDR entry

and in the prescribing brochure from Sigma Tau, and this is what I

take, but I have known CPT and carnitine deficiency patients who

have taken as much as 7 g/day for limited length of time.

You may have more GI distress on that high a dose, assuming this is

oral and not IV (as in 's case).

I misread your post from the one I answered. I take 9 in a day, not 18.

That would be double what I am supposed to take--I weigh 140 now but when

the prescription was written last year I weighed 125. In November he also

recommended my son take the three 330 mg tablets or 1000 mg 3 times a day.

My son is 11 and weighs about 105.

You might want to look into taking the liquid. 2 teaspoons is 1000 mg so

you would need to take 4 teaspoons three times a day. It is a wierd cherry

flavor that you can refrigerate but is not bad. I mixed it in choc milk for

my son but someone else said they mixed it with apple juice and it tasted

fine. Orange juice was bad though.

Whatever you do--start and increase slowly. When I went to the liquid and

also went to the dosage I was prescribed I had bad diahrear but once backed

down and went up slowly am fine.
