Guest guest
Dear Dawn, I can give personal testimony, Miralax worked wonders for Bill. Since he has been taking it, he has NO problems with constipation. The stool is soft. It comes in powder form which is mixed with water. It is practically tasteless. A 30 day supply costs approximately $45-50. Ask the doctor to prescribe it - it is not an over the counter medicine, but has few side effects. Tell Celeste I hope she is feeling a lot better. Guest guest
I agree. My husband has used Miralx twice a day for past 18 months. The miralax has reduced his problem with constipation and finally a major impaction. Good luck to you both. Guest guest
Hi all, One thing to remember is that few MSA patients are alike and what works for one may not work for some others. I was reading that Miralax takes a prescription and costs $35 a month, note that Charlotte takes the generic Colace (ducsolate sodium) and it costs about $4.00 for about 6 months in liquid form. Others have been using a high fiber home brew laxitive of prunes, tea and some other stuff. Our doctor told us to try the Colace first and it took three days the first time (a tablespoon twice a day) for it to work, but when it worked, we had to back off. Just like Sinemet - you have to adjust dosages to fit the symptoms. Below are descriptions of how MiraLax and Colace work and possible side effects of each: Colace - Stool softeners (emollients)—Stool softeners encourage bowel movements by helping liquids mix into the stool and prevent dry, hard stool masses. This type of laxative has been said not to cause a bowel movement but instead allows the patient to have a bowel movement without straining. Side effects For stool softener (emollient)-containing - Skin rash --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Miralax - Hyperosmotics—Hyperosmotic laxatives encourage bowel movements by drawing water into the bowel from surrounding body tissues. This provides a soft stool mass and increased bowel action. - The polymer type is a polyglycol (polyethylene glycol), a large molecule that causes water to be retained in the stool; this will soften the stool and increase the number of bowel movements. It is used for short periods of time to treat constipation. Side effects - For hyperosmotic-containing - Confusion; dizziness or light-headedness; irregular heartbeat; muscle cramps; unusual tiredness or weakness -------------------------------------------- Note on laxitives - MSA patients should NOT use mineral oil!!! Qusetions about your laxitive - go to this site: http://www.intelihealth.com/IH/ihtIH?d=dmtUSPV2 & c=319652 & p=~br,IHW|~st,8124|~r,WSIHW000|~b,*|#GXX46 Make sure the whole url makes it to your Location line - if not you need to cut and paste the end on to your location bar. On your location bar the last four characters should be "XX46" Take care, Bill and Charlotte

Guest guest
Just as an FYI, I tried Lactulose and the only thing it did was make me gain weight since there is so much sugar in it. YMMV. cghng888 wrote: >-Hi there, i responded once about the benefits of zelnorm, good for >gastroparesis, but also constipation.
