Craig:

First of all, welcome to the Mosaic list. We're happy you've joined us. I

think your Home Program/Therapist survey idea is really great! (My older son

has a baseball game in a few minutes, but I'll fill one out and post it

later.) :)

This is very valuable information- thanks for offering to pull this together.

Let's all contribute to this, and then perhaps we can post the results (i.e.:

fee ranges for Coordinators, therapists, etc).

Thanks again.

Fantastic idea Craig. Can this survey be posted on the NJFamiliesWAutism

list also?

provide us standards as to what should be paid, etc. Our school does

not really know either??? As you know, if you are developing a home

program, there are a lot of things unknown - or you trial and error.

Anyway, I have below a survey about therapist costs. It would be

great if anybody/everybody could answer, etc. Since this may be a

topic of private interest, I would be happy to collect the responses

and present a summary of the results in the future. Of course, if

something is already out there - please let me know.

**** SURVEY BELOW ****

Home Program – Discrete Trial

Our current home program is coordinated by outreach services of a

local autism school. The therapists that make up our team are private

consultants, not affiliated with the autism school. In general, we

found the therapists by word of month, etc. In any event,

approximately every two weeks, a coordination meeting is conducted by

the outreach services and is attended by all therapists.

Questions:

a) Should the therapists be paid for these meetings? Or, should the

rate they charge for therapy sessions be inclusive of outside

consultations (i.e. – like a staff meeting)? What if therapists

used were directly connected to outreach services (i.e. – their

employees)? Would that change the idea of whether or not the meeting

is compensated or charged from outreach services?

B) What is the appropriate hourly rate to pay for somebody with:

No college degree and no experience (basically, a student we would

train) ?

BA/BS degree and no experience (basically, we would train) ?

MA/MS degree and no experience (basically, we would train) ?

Ph.D. degree and no experience (basically, we would train) ?

No degree, but with less than one year experience in discrete trials ?

No degree, but with more than one year experience in discrete trials ?

BA/BS degree, but with less than one year experience in trials ?

BA/BS degree, with more than one year experience in trials ?

MA/MS degree, but with less than one year experience in trials ?

MA/MS degree, with more than one year experience in trials ?

Ph.D. degree, but with less than one year experience in trials ?

Ph.D. degree, with more than one year experience in trials ?

c) What state and county do you reside in?

Your answers to the above questions would be appreciated. Thank you

for your assistance.

I have not used the services of an " outreach " program. I will defer to others

here who have this experience....

I think someone totally " green " (untrained and no experience) merits

somewhere around $15- $20./hr, regardless of their degree.

> No degree, but with less than one year experience in discrete trials ?

> No degree, but with more than one year experience in discrete trials ?

I think the *experience* in ABA and how proficient the therapist is,

should dictate here. For example, I personally have an MBA (graduate degree),

but if I started doing discrete trial/ABA in somebody's home program

tomorrow, I don't think I'd be worth 'squat' because I just don't have a feel

for how to do it effectively with a variety of differently-abled kids.

If somebody had about a year of experience, and was doing fabulous and

really connecting with my child in the home program, but didn't yet have

his/her degree, I'd still think this person's time was worth say $20-$30/hr.

See above. Obviously, when you get up to someone with a PhD and several years

of experience, you're moving up to the level of a person who, theoretically,

might be able to Supervise/Coordinate a home program. This might move you up

into the $50-$70/hr range. I would be a little leery of anyone who charged

more than $75/hr, even as an experienced Coordinator.

> c) What state and county do you reside in?

Bergen county, NJ

Additional comments:

When we started our son's home ABA program (at age 2.7 yrs), we hired the

*esteemed* Gold, M.Ed, formerly of the Alpine School as Coordinator. She

did a good job at setting up the book and the programs, and she charged us

$60/hr (back in Spring of 1999), which we thought was fair. We had to go hunt

down all our own therapists (she gaves us a few contacts, but none of her

referrals had hours available). Once we got a team of regular therapists and

the weeks went on, we found that was very difficult to get in touch

with. We subsequently learned that she was running several home programs

simultaneously (too many?), and overseeing the creation of the Fair Lawn

Autism Preschool program, besides. Very busy lady, but that didn't help us

when our son needed his programs reviewed and updated or moved.

We initially found therapists by soliciting ABA teachers from some of the

local Autism schools (EPIC and the School were amenable to this

at that time.) I simply faxed a " classified " notice to each of the schools'

program directors, specifying our home program scheduling needs and our son's

relative abilities. We did get responses and most of the people we hired

stayed with us for several months. When or if they did leave, they helped us

find replacement therapists from among their colleagues.

Hope some of this was useful or informative.

Barbara,

I was a little hesitate about that, as I thought our current

therapists may see the posting from me. What are your thoughts about

this?

,

thanks for the comments. I will do my best to present an informative

survey result. Who knows? At some point, perhaps it can be posted on

somebody's autism site, as I do not have one myself...

Craig-

My therapists would be fine with me posting the note. Do you want me to

do it? BTW, have you been getting responses to your survey on this list?

Thank you for posting the therapist lists. I'm from Utah, and we have no

email group, so I joined yours. I hope you don't mind. I've got my

autistic son on the GFCF diet, and I'm also giving him breastmilk to

boost his immune system. He's improving at an incredibly fast rate. I

still need all the info I can get, so thanks for all you guys do.
