A Working Mother's Prayer

By Cheryl M.Kremer

Now I lay me down to sleep,

I pray, the Lord, I won't get beeped,

My cell phone will not start to ring,

My e-mail will not sound a " ding. "

I wish for peace throughout my house,

For silence quiet as a mouse,

No little children in my bed,

No thoughts of work run through my head.

And, while I'm at it, may I ask

For help with one of my worst tasks,

Getting my children out of bed,

Without my screams that wake the dead?

Let there be coffee made for me,

My clothing pressed . . . nylons run-free.

And let this be a good hair day,

Don't let me see more strands of gray.

Let there be milk for breakfast-time,

My car keys out for me to find,

The children dressed with matching socks,

Backpacks are filled with each lunch box.

I pray for traffic to be light,

My kids will have no backseat fights.

They'll have their coats, mittens and hats,

I'm off to work . . . ten minutes flat.

And once I'm there, please let me see,

A parking space out front for me.

My phone light will not be bright red,

A sign of my great day ahead.

I'm on a roll . . . so I will ask,

For no complaints, no nasty fax,

I'm left alone, nothing goes wrong,

No interruptions all day long.

I know that I must end this prayer,

But one more thing . . . or do I dare?

I know I've asked you for a lot,

But may I add just one more thought?

Lord, if you could just see a way,

For me to have one perfect day,

I'd be forever in your debt.

(I'll take whatever I can get!)
