Guest guest
Hi - Welcome to the group! Our daughter Camryn has unilateral microtia/atresia and is currently in Korea waiting to come home (we are adopting her from South Korea, she is six months old). Obviously, we have not yet gained experience with doctors, etc but there are some wonderful people here who will be able to answer a lot of your questions. How old is Lily? Sandy MY DAUGHTER Dear members of the AtresiaMicrotia Group,I have never belonged to an on-line group such as this and am not quite sure what the protocol is regarding correspondence. I will begin with my reason for joining the group. My daughter, Lily, has unilateral microtia. I have been researching our different options for outer ear surgery and was hoping I might get some insight into the pros and cons of synthetic verses rib reconstruction. I have been in contact with a practice which works out of Los Angeles Children's hospital performing synthetic reconstruction. This seems like the best option at this point. I have also met with a plastic surgeon at Children's Hospital in Boston and have an appointment with another at Massachusetts Eye and Ear. Guest guest
Welcome !! You have come to the right place. There are many members here that know all about the rib graft procedure, pro's cons etc. I will leave it to them to help out. I find the best approach is to ask any specific questions you have, and the list will provide. First place you might want to check (if you haven't already) is www.earsurgery.com (Dr. Burt Brent's web page) As for the synthetic approach you are talking about. Is this the same as the polyethelene implant? If so, we have experts here on that too. Again, ask away. You might want to check out Dr Romo's web page www.earreconstruction.com I think you will find this group VERY informative, helpful and supportive. If you are looking for other possibly helpful links, go to the Bookmarks section of the AtresiaMicrotia web page (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AtresiaMicrotia/links). BTW: Thanks to all the list members who have added links in the bookmarks section. Keep up the good work!! Glad to have you aboard!! Guest guest
Hello ! My name is beth and we have a son, , who is 9 years old and currently undergoing ear reconstruction. He has unilateral microtia with atresia and hemifacial microsomia. We live in Michigan (go blue!) and have been travelling to California for the surgeries. Dr. Brent (www.earsurgery.com) is our surgeon of choice and we all couldn't be happier. He utilizes the rib graft surgical technique for reconstruction. We are currently awaiting stage 4 (late February). My husband and I were just saying how we have no regrets or have second-guessed our choice. However, before we made that decision, I was riddled with "what if's" about what to do! This group was, and is, fantastic! There are a lot of pros and cons to all of the reconstruction options. I would be more than happy to review our experiences with you at any time. There is too much to list here, but e-mail me privately and I'll fill ya in. heyboucher@.... Also, if you'd like, I can give you some tips on obtaining possible assistance with the airlines if you choose to travel outside of your area. Welcome aboard! Guest guest
Welcome and Lily. My son Brayden (15months) also have unilateral microtia/atresia. This is a wonderful group and you will get all the answers you need here as well as support and friendship. As it is some time before Brayden will have surgery I have only looked into the options but have not met with any doctors yet. I'm sure others on the list will be full of info for you. Are you talking with Dr Reinisch (sp?) in Los Angeles? What doctors are you seeing in Boston? I ask because we are going to Boston this summer. Welcome Autumn

Guest guest
Dear Kirstin, I live in Ireland and have a 7 month old son Conor who has unilaterial microtia and atresia on his right side. Unfortunatley in ireland we do not have a choice as to what reconstruction method is used - the only option available here is the rib cartlidge reconstruction. However I have been looking into the method using synthetic material and this seems to be a good option and so we thinking about travelling abroad (if we can raise the money) to have this done. We have years to think about it yet but it is good to know what options are available and to be able to discuss them with people who have experience of them. You'll find the group very useful for this! Welcome!
