Guest guest
Hi--Thanks to everyone who responded to my last post. It is still our first week with my daughter's Hanger band. I know this whole process will hopefully benefit my daughter in the end, but I am having a much harder time with this than I expected. I am so worried all the time that I am not putting it on correctly, or that she is uncomfortable, etc. I have also found that some people say such insensitive things to me--both family and strangers. When and how does this get easier??
Guest guest
It does get easier!!! Hang in there mommy!!!!! You will find that before long you will think your baby is naked with out the band! As far as the comments - I use those times as teaching moments. I love educating people about Plagio. The same people who were against us getting for our dd are now pointing out when they see other babies that need it!!! :-) JEN Mommy to 4...and 1 more!!!! Guest guest
Hi, don't worry it gets much easier. If you're really not sure about how to put the band on visit the ortho again and have them show you. we went back after a week and even though they didn't change anything I felt better that they checked it out. as for people saying things, its easier not to care once you see it working (for us it was only 2 weeks). in the begining the looks and comments sometimes got to me, but there are a lot of good looks and comments too. and you'll find times when your sharing information helps someone else who doesn't know about plagio, repo or banding. hang in there. -christine mom to sydney/ 10 mo /starband grad 10/06 > > Hi--Thanks to everyone who responded to my last post. Guest guest
---Hi, The first week is the hardest because it takes them some time to adjust to the helmet. Jenna has been in her's for 8 1/2 weeks now and the times just seemes to have flow by. And you really never get over the looks that you get from other people. I came home from the grocery story on Sunday in tears because I felt that people were looking a her funny. But they were probably just curious and I just put to much into it. But we got to remember they will never know that they ever had a helmet except for the pictures and perfect little round heads. Best of luck, it does get easier. Guest guest
I agree with Thad. Â My son has a Hanger helmet, too. Â He has had it for 2 weeks. Â When we measured yesterday his head circumference only increased by 1 mm. Â But the asymmetry corrected by 3 mm. Â But the correction would be faster if the head growth is faster. Â So, there is no average amount of mm correction per week. Â It all depends on the child, the child's age, and the helmet. Â I do know that the largest growth spurt is between 4 and 7 months, so if your child is between that age you would have much more correction and faster. Â But if your child is older like my son (he is 11 months) the growth is slower and the correction is smaller each week. Â Hope this helps. What is a normal amount of head adjustment in a week's time? I didn't think to ask at the appointment this morning. She told us that he had corrected 2mm. But I don't know if we should expect that every week. Thanks in advance for any and all input.
Guest guest
" I believe that in cases of plagiocephaly (specifically asymmetrical flat head, as opposed to brachycephaly), there is a distinct type of improvement, " angular conformance, " which ideally would only impact early measurements. The skull is more or less flexible at the sutures and especially around fontanelles, and so can be directly shaped by outside force, regardless of growth. " Thad, I totally agree with this. Our tech at CT admitted as much to us, saying that they almost always see the greatest change in the beginning weeks in the band. There is certainly still correction over time as the baby's head grows and that growth is funneled by the band into the needed areas, but in those first weeks there does seem to be some shifting happening. I also agree that it *sounds* much better to say that the band doesn't shift any existing shape but just directs the new growth, and so they stick with that explanation, but I really believe there is some initial shifting (and I'm not worried at all that it has any negative effects on brain growth or otherwise). > > > I am new to this group but our son has recently been fitted with a > > Hanger Band and finished his first week today. Guest guest
Hi, This makes sense and we expected the most improvement in the beginning. We saw something different. The first couple weeks we saw some change, but not outstanding. Then there was a few months, we saw little change. Then to our surprise we kept seeing change and if anything it picked up for a few months. By even eight months in the band the improvement had not slowed. This was all to my great relief since after the first few months and the tales of growth slowing with age, I was extremely scared that we were too late. We've been in the band almost 10 months and we still see subtle improvement. Maybe, our case was different since as time went on, we added more intensive alternative treatments.
