Hi Crystal,

Congrats on Brennen!! Is he your first?

My name is and my son Lachie was born nearly 2 years ago with Unilateral Microtia. He has no opening into the ear and we have luckily only had one ear infection, which unfortunately the doctors didn't pick it up until it was in both ears. (touch wood) we have had no more.

We don't know what he has "inside" and we won't know until he is older. But an audiologist was able to give me some news about the workings from a hearing test on his Microtic ear. From the response she got, she seems to think that the inner "bits" are working and it may just be bone and skin blocking the sound.

Other than a slight hearing impairment, he is developing really well.

Of course your son is perfect. It could've been a small nose, or big eyes or big feet (like Lachie has). This is what makes him, him!

I know there is no reason for why this has happened, but it has and you love him with all your heart. Don't think of the maybe's and if you could've done something during the pregnancy to have caused it. We have all been there and done that. It's quite normal. But focus all that energy into loving Brennen and raising him to be a very healthy, happy boy.

I hope you find the answers and support you are looking for and you certainly come to the right place for that. This group is wonderful and you are never alone.

Big Hugs to Brennen!! And one for you for being so strong!!

Hello

Hi everyone. My name is Crystal, and my husband and I were blessed with a son, Brennen, five months ago, on February 7th. We noticed right away that his left ear was smaller than his left, and he failed his newborn hearing screening. The pediatrician who checked him out just told us that it was an inherited triat and nothing more, so we thought nothing of it, until he got his first ear infection in late May. I do wonder if it was indeed an ear infection, because I noticed then that all of a sudden it was closed up. Completely. I couldn't see a hole. So I called the doctor and we went to see him. He prescribed antibiotics and ear drops for an ear infection. a week later, we took him back for a check up and they said everything was a-ok, but that there was a little debris left and to try to work it out with warm soapy water. I did this, but it didn't work. At his four month appt. on June 21st, it was blocked again. The pediatrician tried scraping at it, but decided not to because he thought it would make his ear bleed. He told us to get him ear wax removal drops. I put them in his ear for three weeks and this time we went back again with no change. And this time, the pediatrician concluded that it wasn't wax, but skin, and said that he thought that when he had an ear infection, scar tissue grew and closed up his ear canal. He sent us to a specialist. The specialist diagnosed him with Microtia, thankfully a very mild case, and aural atresia. We go for a cat scan on Monday to see the inner parts of his ear. I've looked for information on these subjects, but it's all so confusing right now. I understand a lot of it..about the surgical options, the rib harvesting, the reconstruction. I'm unclear as to why he was born with this, and even though the doctor has told me that I did nothing wrong during my pregnancy, I can't help but think that maybe I did, or didn't do, something and now my baby boy has to suffer. Maybe I did, because as far as I've learned, the medical field is unclear as to why it happens too. I would never cause suffering to my child intentionally. I feel so bad that he will have to go through this. But, microtia and atresia or not, my son is perfect, and always will be. Thank you for letting me into your group. I look forward to being a part of it and getting to know all of you.

Thanks,

Crystal

Hi Crystal,

I to went threw some questionning of myself when our

daughter (who is now almost 10 yrs old) was born with

microtia/atresia. I often asked the specialist if

maybe i had done something wrong during my pregnancy.

He oftened reassured me that it was not my fault.

As you know there are many options to repair this. Our

daughter went threw surgery in 1999 to build the outer

ear canal that was missing in her right ear. Her right

ear is also smaller than the left one but not very

noticiable...some small reconstructive surgery was

done on the outside of the ear itself.

This group is very good and supportive, you'll find

the support you need and many answers to your

questions.

Please don't hesitate to ask questions.

And welcome to the group

Welcome Crystal, and Brennen!!!

You'll find a lot of information here. I joined this group when my son

Brayden was 3 weeks old (he's now 21 months, time flys) This is where I

learned all of my information and have received tons of great support.

We seem to have all had the feelings of guilt about causing the

Microtia/Atresia. It is difficult at times. I found that arming myself with

as much information as I could helped me through.

Welcome

--- ,

Hi, and congratulations on Lachie. I love that name, btw. Yes,

Brennen is our first. Finding out about Brennen's condition has been

a shock, but really, I suspected that there was more to his ear than

they has originally told me. But,other than that, he's developing

beautifully! He just got his second tooth yesterday and is trying to

crawl. He jabbers all the time. We haven't had his hearing tested

sine he was born, we have an appt. for August 6th and a ct scan

appointment on Monday. I hope that since he can talk and jabber, and

he startles to really loud sounds sometimes, that that means that his

other ear is normal. =) You are quite right, God has blessed us

with special babies. I thank God everyday for Brennen and my dying

wish would be to have just one more day with him, one more chance to

hold him and see that beautiful smile. He already says mama. I love

it.

Thank you so much for welcoming me, and I know you're right about not

blaming myself. Even if I did do something that caused it, it has

happened and we can't change it. all I can do is make sure that my

son grows up healthy and happy. So far, I've done my job right =)

He's a little chunker with a permasmile, lol. I love it

Thanks again, and hugs to you and Lachie,

Crystal

Hi Crystal,

Congratulations on Brennen! I've been researching

Microtia for 6 years now (as Cameron was born with it

in '96) and you are absolutely NOT to blame!! I tried

to blame myself for two years and there was just no

reason for it. I had a healthy wonderful pregnancy

and you realize that there are drug addicts out there

having healthy babies all the time! It's not fair,

but it's also NOT your fault. You can stop blaming

yourself this minute. :) You're lucky Brennen has a

mild case! Hopefully it can be corrected easily as

well! If I were you, I would check out

www.earsurgery.com if you haven't already, and contact

Dr. Brent about Brennen's condition.

As far as worring about surgery to correct it, most

kiddos are very positive and excited about it by the

time they're five or six. Cameron is excited and

positive about his upcoming surgery - which Dr. Brent

will perform on Wednesday! Whatever you decide is

right for your child and your family, know that there

is no wrong decision! With your love and support,

he'll get through whatever life holds for him and he's

lucky to have such a loving Mommie!

If I can be of any help, let me know! I'll be in

California for the surgery until Aug. 3rd, but I'd be

happy to answer any questions you have when I return.

Please let go of the blame! You don't deserve it!

Welcome Crystal! My son, , was born February 5th! has bilateral atresia/microtia and has been wearing a bone conduction hearing aid for a month now. Glad you found us!

Hugs,

Christie and

P.S. I still wonder if it was something I "did." I had the flu very early on in my pregnancy and will always wonder if there is a connection there...and from this list I learned that there is a theory out there of a "failed twin" pregnancy. I hope that someday I can just accept the fact that it just happened and I didn't do anything. But you know, I truly feel that God gave me for a special reason. God has something special planned for this little person that already has such a sweet disposition.

--- Lyn,

Thank you. I know you all are right and I should stop blaming myself.

I can't change the past even if I did have something to do with it,

and if I did, it certainly wasn't intentional, so that part is done!

(okay so it's easier said than done, but I'm going to work on it;) )

Thanks again, and congratulations on Cameron. I'm sure he's a happy

and healthy little boy, thanks to having a wonderful mommy who loves

him!
