Guest guest
Hi! I also wanted to know if anyone else had a problem with gagging! Lachie gags when he is eating any type of food or even drinking. I remember reading this somewhere recently that this is somehow related to the Microtia. His kidneys, heart, brain and lungs have all been checked. Our G.P. last week has picked up a heart murmer and wants to check it again in a few weeks because he has had a cold. This has been the only problem we have come across so far. He has had hearing tests and his good ear is fine and his microtic ear has 60-70% hearing. They have not done any scans for an ear canal and when I asked why they just told me it was unnecessary. He's fine and healthy. Am I just a over reacting concerned parent for wanting to know if he has an ear canal? At the moment I am leaving all the options open to Lachie when he gets older to decide for himself what he wants. Lachie is fine and healthy and my main concern was his development. But he proving totally opposite to what I had expected. His G.P. has said that his skills, speech etc. are at the level of a 2 1/2 year old. I treat him like a normal child and talk to him at a normal level and he seems to be fine with that. Typically he can be ignorant and I am sure that will be an excuse when he is older why he didn't hear me ask him to take the rubbish out etc!!!! We'll see! & Lachie

Guest guest
Hi Steve, Yes Lachie is 16 months and I'm sure he is turning 5!! ha! ha! When we had the hearing test done that is all they said to me. That he had 60-70% hearing in his microtic ear. When I am at the G.P. next I will ask about the decibel conversion and let u know. Us Aussies might do things a bit differently. I don't know! I am not overly concerned about the hearing side of things mainly just the outer appearance and I think that is what we will do. Here Lachie has to wait until he is 10 before any surgery can be done. But I did see on the website www.microtia.net that in the states children are operated on as young as 5. Is this correct? The main info I have found in the past is from Dr Bonilla at the Microtia-Congenital Ear Institute at San Texas. Is this the average age? Whether a CAT scan looking for the ear canal is necessary or not, depends on what you plan to do with this information. If you plan for a canalplasty, I think the scan is essential. If not, I don't think it is needed. I am a little confused by the hearing level you posted. Usually, audiologists quote hearing levels in dB (decibels). My son for example, has a hearing loss of 60dB to 70dB accross all frequencies, this is typical of a complete conductive hearing loss. It is hard to compare this with 60-70%. > But he proving totally opposite to what I had expected. His G.P. has > said that his skills, speech etc. are at the level of a 2 1/2 year > old. 2 1/2? You said he was 16 months old right? An advanced child....obviously comes from good stock!! > I treat him like a normal child and talk to him at a normal > level and he seems to be fine with that. And so you should. He is a normal child, perhaps a little better than a normal child...I know mine is! Steve
