I have noticed on some cookies marked as " Sugar Free " that they contain

something called Sugar Alcohol. How does this differ from a regular sugar

content? The label on the box claims no sugars but 5 g of Sugar Alcohol

Alcohol sugars enter the bloodstream as glucose more slowly that

conventional sugars. This provides two advantages. 1) Since alcohol

sugars are chemically different than normal table sugar, the

manufacturers can advertise that their products are " sugar free, "

fooling gullible diabetics that it's safe to eat as much of their

products as they wish. 2) As they enter the bloodstream more slowly,

there actually is an advantage to the diabetic as the pancreas has more

time to produce insulin to deal with the glucose load from the alcohol

sugars. This actually does keep your BGs lower to some degree.

However, in the case of something like cookies, you still have to deal

with the rest of the carbohydrates which are in the flour. Those can

be far too many for most diabetics .... which brings us back to reason

#1. Although the flour in the cookies can raise your BGs to

unacceptable levels, the manufacturer can still deceive uninformed

diabetics that their cookies are safe to eat because they're " sugar

free. "

The disadvantages: 1) Slow or fast, they're still carbohydrates

which you have to deal with to manage your blood glucose levels.

They're not " free " foods. 2) They tend to cause loose stools or

diarrhea if you consume much of them. Enjoy! Immodium rules!

That was my experience. I ate a 'single serving' of sugar free candy

and had a stomach ache for well over a day. My system apparently does

not tolerate sugar alcohol at all.
