Hi again, I am possible mito and have a few more questions. I have

been having breathing difficulties for a few weeks now. Doctors have

me on steroids, help a little. My question is is this common? When I

say breathing problems I mean walking to one room to another I get

out of breath, hard to take a deep breath, I cough. Is this

dangerous?? Should I go to the hospital?? I went to the Dr and she

just says I am moving air so I am not in any danger, the only thing

is I have low lung capacity, when I blew into the tube thing. I am

just really worried, I have been lightheaded today and yesterday,

really weak. But its also hot out.

Another question, I had a swallowing study done and It showed I am

aspirating. Is this common with mito?? The epiglotis isn't working

right. I know I am grasping at straws but I just want some answers.

Having a husband and 2 young children at home its really hard to try

to live like I am living without knowing whats wrong.

Thanks

What you are describing sounds like air hunger. Does it improve when you

don't keep going and sit down to rest? I would run the air hunger idea past

your doctor before making the assumption that it is the problem. If it is

and you have mito, it is because the body is asking for more energy, so it

asks for more oxygen to burn the fuel that is there. The trouble is that

with malfunctioning mito, it isn't successful. This is very common to many

of us.

Swallowing issues can be mito and is not uncommon, but it could also be

something else, so you really need to address it with a doctor. You might

want to ask your doctor if it would be helpful for you to see specialists

for these problems, just so something fixable isn't let go.

No.. you are not being a pain asking questions. Please keep doing it. Many

people join but never post but they have the same questions you do. When you

post them and we answer, it helps them as well.

You will also see that what goes around comes around on this list. One day, you

will surprise yourself by providing the answers and it will happen so quickly

that you won't even notice it.

Welcome to Mitoldies. I'm glad you found us but not glad you are dealing with

all this. Hopefully, we can help you get some answers you are seeking and lead

you to healthier days.

-Hi , I have problems with swallowing and shortness of breath

too. I know you have to be careful of aspirating, because it could

cause aspirtation pneumonia, which would increas your breathing

problems, Celia

Hi ,

When I first joined I had alot of breathing problems. @

two things were wrong, first I have asthma that was different from

the loud weasing type. I had gone to a couple of pulm. drs. and

they said nothings wrong. Then I went to a 3rd pulm and he took more

time to listen to my lungs and he said he could hear weasing in the

small bronchial tubes at the bottom of my lungs. He gave me singular

and that was the first time in years I could take a deep breath.

But that didn't solve all the breathing problems, although I could

finally take a deep breath but I was suffering air hunger. This

really happened because I was doing to much. House chores shopping,

going out etc. I have cut my activies 50-75% and the symptoms don't

come back unless I overdo it.

My kids are mostly grown so I don't have to do that much for them

anymore. If your kids are small, this is very, very hard to do.

I still feel like I being lazy, but to be so air hungry is aweful!!

So make a new plan for yourself and think about how you can cut back

on you daily activies.

Do make sure you explored all medical reason for you problem first.

Take care,

Hi ,

I have the same problem with asthma. I don’t have the “loud weasing

type” – but more the “hacking cough type” with a tight chest (and if a

doctor listens closely, you can hearing weasing in the bottom of my lungs

– they also took a chest x-ray that shows scarring from asthma attacks).

I lucked out and the first Pulm. Doctor I went to, said that I did have

asthma and told me that most doctors are not aware of the type of asthma I

have, since the weasing is more common. I tried singular but it didn’t

work for me. I agree, I only have the air hunger when I’ve over done it.

For the asthma, I try to stay away from things that trigger it, when I

can’t my inhaler or a nebulizer treatment helps it.

I and my two sons also have this type of asthma. We don't even have the

wheezing in the chest most of the time - just the tightness.

Laurie, what do you usually do for the tightness in the chest? Singular

doesn’t work for me. The inhalers do work, but I HATE that buzz and “sped

up feeling”.

I do use my Proventil inhaler if I have to. I also have Azmacort, but only

use it with infections and then have to use it regularly. I am unable to use

some of the other inhalers. Drinking warm water (not real hot) will

sometimes solve the problem. Never lay down if tight, but prop yourself up

if trying to sleep and sit upright when awake.

Also try belly breathing. This is using abdominal muscles instead of

diaphragm. I use to teach a class to parents of children with asthma, so I

have tried most of the tricks and these are the ones that work for me. I

also use relaxation techniques to relax. Having trouble breathing tends to

be scary, so relaxing is important.
