Guest guest
i had a VERY easy birth. a scheduled c-section (repeat after s-section with #1) and my daughter has torticollis and plagiocephaly. i guess it was from how she was positioned inside me but certainly not from how she came out. funny, with my first child i was induced with LOTS of pitocin - didn't progress after 10 hours (dropping heart rate and all) and she came out without any torticollis after all that trauma. who knows. i often read that it's caused by the birth process and then in parenthsis it says (except it can occur in c-sections) - my daughter is an example of that. --julie > > I had an emergency c-section after being given a dose of stadol - it > caused my son's heart rate to drop. Guest guest
The birth of my son was completely normal. In his case, his torticollis was due to " intrauterine constraint " . In the third trimester, his head position did not change. He spent a number of weeks with one side of his head pushing on his shoulder. As a result the SCM muscle became shortned / injured. Here is an excellent article which explains the medical theory behind it. http://www.contemporarypediatrics.com/contpeds/article/articleDetail.js p?id=108032 While you shouldn't rule out all of the possibilities, there is definitely a sound medical basis for what your specialists have told you. > > I had an emergency c-section after being given a dose of stadol - it > caused my son's heart rate to drop. Guest guest
I went through a somewhat traumatic birth. Jakob was born 17 days early. I tried a vaginal delivery, the vaccum was used and really popped off hard of Jakob's head. He had some bad bruising which lead to a pocket of fluid on his skull for a few month. I ended up having a c-section also, good thing because there was a knot in the cord and also the cord was wrapped around Jakob's neck loosely once. In terms of his brachy and traumatic birth I am not sure if they go hand in hand. He does not have tort, but I believe some of the other circumstances could have lead to other issues. Guest guest
I too had a similar delivery. My water broke and 10 hours later I was stuck at 8 cm. I took the stadol to take the edge off (what a horrible drug that is) and ended up with an emergency c-section about 2 hours later when the heart rate dropped suddenly. My son was attempting to make his way through the birth canal sunny side up and I wonder how long his head was pressed on my tail bone. He was born with a flat back of the head and his cone shaped head never really went away until he spent 10 weeks in a DOC band. Insurance won't pay for it and just denied the first appeal. Anyone have experience with United Healthcare second appeals for cosmetic reasons? Messenger with Voice. PC-to-Phone calls for ridiculously low rates. Guest guest
Why do you think that about Stadol? I ask b/c my husband and I really feel like everything was FINE b/f I was given the Stadol. The hospital neglected to put it in my son;s birth records which makes me wonder.... Hovey <flyingchef777@...> wrote: I too had a similar delivery. Guest guest
My son's tort was caused by intrauterine restriction since I'm 59 inches and he was 21 inches. His head was really misshapen when he came out which I'm guessing was also due to being in the birth canal too long. He was 4 days late and it was 24 hours between my water breaking and an emergency c-section. (I was awake for it but don't remember much because I was getting very sick, very fast due to something called HELLP Syndrome.) Guest guest
My daughter decided she wanted to " walk " out of me. My water broke at 32 weeks and when I arrived at the hospital they found my daughters feet " hanging out " of me. My hospital doesn't deliever less than 35 weeks so while trying to decided if they should transfer me or not they just decided on an emergency C-section would be better than risking the transfer. Everything was smooth until they got to her head. It took a while because she " got stuck " was the term they used. Now the question....did her head get stuck because of her postioning inside and that caused the tort or was it her coming out and injury to her neck what caused the tort. I will never know. My daughter was in the NICU for 2 1/2 weeks and her basinet was literally in a " nook " in the wall so in order to keep her from facing the wall she was ALWAYS on her right side...thank you very much we now have plagio. Its funny how all these things come together after you get the diagnosis. In any event, I am just thankful my little girl is doing well and after seeing pictures of everyones lil cuties in their helmets I feel better about it and am looking forward to rounding her little head out. Guest guest
It can be due to the child's position in utero and not actually related to the birthing experience. Technicially my births were easy. Yes, I was induced with both but it was to regulate contractions. na dropped early and then was +1 (under pelvic bone) for 10 days. She was sunny side up. Kiersten didn't drop as early but was +2 for about 24 hours. na's was obvious from birth but her tort didn't become noticable until 3 months. A tort diagnosis around 3 months is not uncommon because that is when infants have enough head control for others to realize their preferences. Kiersten did not appear to have plagio at birth but was diagnosed with tort at 5 months (first suspected at 3 months). We did everything known to prevent her tort and plagio from birth (hindsight from na). Some kids (IMO) have very soft heads and with any neck involvement (whether inutero position or traumatic birth) will develop plagio. na, DOC Grad X2 Feb 04 Kiersten, DOC Grad Apr 04 www.thefilyaws.com/plagio/plagio.html > > > > I had an emergency c-section after being given a dose of stadol - it > > caused my son's heart rate to drop. Guest guest
simon was head down for the last 4 months which seems to be the cause of his torticollis. he was a week late. i was in labor for 12hrs had a epidural the doctor that was on call was horrible he told me that i shouldnt need a csection then told the nurses to get me ready for one. i was lucky that the doctors changed shift shortly after that. the doctor that came on shift said i shouldnt need a csection that it seemed like he should just come right out but for some reason he was stuck and no one could figure out why so we decided to try the vacuum. the first vacuum they tried was to small and didnt work the second one worked but took alot of me pushing and them pulling and of course the epidural was wearing off. now that we think back on all that stuff we realize that maybe the reason he was stuck was because his ear was to his shoulder but we will never know. i dont think alot of obs know about torticollis or plagio their field is mainly taking care of mom and taking care of baby while its in the womb once its out its handed off to the pediatrician. aron holwig
