Guest guest
You should be able to get a term life insurance policy for relatively low price if you have not been dx'd officially yet. I pay $12/month for $100,000 coverage. It is cheaper the younger you are and if you are not a smoker. I got my first policy when I was 25--now 42. Now I would have to pay very high rates because of being a diabetic and the melas. They are not supposed to discriminate because of the mitochondrial disease because many people live to be 80-90 just as the normal population. But, of course many insurance companies probably do. One of the questions on the application is if you have ever been treated for diabetes but many diabetics live a very long and normal life also since it is such a well known disease. Anyway, I would look into getting some sort of small policy now. As said, it is not a pleasant subject but will help your children later. Before I went and got tested for MELAS that is one of the first things the doctor suggested is that I had life insurance so that it would not be a problem later.
