Surely they don't mean that women who take levothyroxine because

they have to have that same chance of having a gay daughter. It's

just a hormone replacement. They would have to be referring to

women who don't need it but take it to lose weight. Otherwise,

pregnant women who have under/untreated hyperthyroidism would have

the same risk.

research shows that pregnant women taking (slimming pills or)

thyroxine are up to eight times more likely to have gay (female)

children.

Not necessarily, Anne. The point is that they are taking an artificial

substance - its not absolutely the same as we make ourselves. So it may have

some other effects, in addition to replacing the natural hormone. If it were

truly identical we wouldn't be here struggling with our hormone replacement

regimes.

I did think the article was a little unhelpful lumping the people who take

slimming pills in with the ones who have to replace essential hormones - but if

you read in detail they do seem to have analysed the groups separately. We'd

need to go to the source to find out exactly what the study found.
