Guest guest
Thanks for the kind words, Randie! I don't know if this is what made the difference or not, but about a year ago I decided to take a little different method with my members and way of leading. I had been focusing on teaching the exchange diet that TOPS recommends and I TOTALLY support, but my chapter wasn't responding to it. I decided to change my focus from teaching portions, food groups and just " teaching facts " in general to one of support. My members just weren't interested in learning what a serving size of mashed potatoes is! Go figure. I slowly realized they were responding to the support I was giving them. My programs now mostly consist of supporting them and inspiring them to come back next week, face the scale even where they know there's a gain, to get moving and to stay focused on losing weight slowly and surely. I have also learned that it is unreasonable for us to expect to lose 1 to 2 pounds each and every week. Half a pound is good too! I've learned that my small losses each week really do add up. Nearly every week I re- inforce that fact. I keep telling them that I seldom lose as much as one pound a week, yet I am still losing and I am still willing to continue on my " eating plan " . I *hate* the word " diet " . I tell them so also and they usually laugh because they KNOW how much I hate that word! I am a very low-key person, not a brilliant speaker! But I love my members and I think they know that. I have found it is much easier for me to be their " cheerleader " instead of their teacher. I am not a natural-born teacher although I feel comfortable teaching the exchange diet, but I can sure give people support when they are trying so hard to lose weight! Or even when they aren't trying so hard! We all go thru those cycles. I keep telling them I'm not killing myself to lose weight, but yet I'm still losing. Very slowly, but my weight does keep going down. I realize these are adults. If they want to learn more nutrition they will learn it somewhere. I also know not many of them are willing to radically change their way of eating. What most of them AREN'T getting in their personal lives is support, positive reinforcement and recognition. I try to give them as much as I can. We do have an overall loss for the chapter this year. Something must be working! Again, thank you for the kind words. I'm sorry for rambling. I'm excited 12 of the miners were rescued tonight and am watching the coverage!
