Hey guys,

just a quick question- ive been having alot more probs with hearing- my mom

says that my TV has been getting louder and louder- i sometimes just use the

CC. Anyways, also having to ask people especially males- to repeat themselves. I

know higher tones are usually more a prob with mito but with me seems the low

ones are my probs. But my hearing test just showed me to still have a mild

hearing loss- its gotten worse since my last test but not much- i think its

gotten alot worse though. They do say my reflexes in my ears barely work and

that

might mean something- but why does it seem my hearing is so much worse yet the

tests dont show that? what am i supposed to do to help hear better- my local

ENT and audiologist didnt seem to think its a prob- well i think so! I guess

im gonna ask the people at georgetown when i go for some of my appts what can

be done if anything to help. Just was wondering if anyone had suggestions?

Also- went to the support group for my area over the weekend- was wonderful-

will

say more about that and a few other things that have happened lately in

another post- im too tired to go on anymore. Am thinking bout you all.

take care,

Adrienne

Hearing is a very complicated thing. It can be anything from wax in the ears

to problems in the way the way the brain processing things and everything in

between. My hearing varies with my energy level. It is always worse in the

evening or if I have pushed myself. I'm sure Alice or Ruth or some of the

others can tell you more. Getting the opinion of town folks is

probably the best thing to do.

About hearing loss - I doubt there's a question I can't handle (unfortunately)

and I'm always available to try to help in this area. My first and most

important piece of advice is to go to a reputable ENT and audiologist and not a

place like Miracle Ear as you need to be seeing the best. If you have an

otolaryngologist you can see, that's even better.

If you are told that your hearing loss qualifies you for a hearing aid, it's a

good idea to try and get one. They are not perfect but they do help. The

hearing aid amplifies the sound you still have but can't bring back what is

gone.

Hearing loss can be due to many reasons including meds. It also can be due to

the disease. I believe that my right side is totally gone because of the

disease and this is why I have lost the use of the implant on that side. I'll

have a better idea of this on 6/29 but right now - I'm not counting on any great

miracles.

Maybe we should get a hearing loss professional to come to one of our chats. I

think I could probably find one that would be willing. Dr s in Dallas

comes to mind immediately.

I think it would be great to get a specialist in hearing problems for the

Monday night MDA chats.

Hi Adrienne I also have a bad hearing loss especially with the low tones

your story sounds way to familiar, I have a 80 dec. loss with both ears, was

at 60 3 years ago and I can bet if I went back it is worse. I've been told by

2 ENT that I need hearing aids but haven't got the money. But I did some

checking with the Lions club and if you qualify financially you can get some

help

paying for them.

I also read with mito it's the high tones that go first but with me it's

not that at all. and I have nerve damage in both ears as well. Good luck and

don't give up.

I was told that having normal highs and lows and deficits in the mid range

were typical of mito. I think that those dealing with us probably have

limited experience with mito patients and are seeing different things in

those that they see. They sure don't see much of us around here.
