Guest guest
Hi For those who are unfamiliar with the term ketogenic diet, I wanted to point something out. There has been discussion recently on this subject. I think most people are really using a low carb, mod. protein diet as opposed to a true ketogenic diet which is used for seizure control in children who don't respond to the anti-consulsant meds used. In it, there has to be a continuous ketosis as measured with urine testing several times a day. It is very high in fats with very low protein and carbs which are measured and a formula followed. It also restricts fluids. It is not very affective for seizure control in adults. I'm just pointing this out for those unfamilar with the term, not to find fault with those using the term. I have had a student on this and we had to give her oil every hour to maintain the ketosis. laurie
Guest guest
Hi Laurie, Thanks for the clarification. I had forgotten the true definition. I am fortunate in that I did manage to stay in ketosis with my HIGH fat, mini carb diet, mod protein diet, or at least I was until I recently started having problems with the animal protein and my kidneys. I had a similar problem with kidneys amd animal protein 25 years ago, which is why I became a vegan in the first place way back then. Now I'm sort of in a quandry trying to get my nut, seed protein sources to work out. I eat organic butter and olive oil " cocktails " all day long. YUM (not)!. I try to think of it as hot buttered popcorn without the popcorn. My doc is thrilled that I've been been able to pretty much control my jerkies, shakies, tremors, etc., with the diet. I've been on for about a year. What a difference! Best Wishes, Anita
Guest guest
Anita It is always a quandry for us - too much or too little. We make these choices everyday. It does get old. laurie > > Reply-To: > Date: Tue, 15 Jun 2004 20:15:12 -0000 > To: > Subject: Re: ketogenic diet > > Hi Laurie, Thanks for the clarification. Guest guest
There are a variety of " true " ketogenic diets, which vary in the ratio of fats to protein and carbs. Ratio depends on age of child and what they're trying to accomplish. I am on a " modified Atkins " diet, which has made me *much* stronger at night, less weakeness, but I still suffer from short-term memory problems and vision problems. So, if I'm in ketosis as shown by spilling ketones in my urine, my diet is ketogenic. *No food* is also ketogenic - many ketogenic diets recommend starting with a 12 - 36 hour fast (for a kid, maybe even an infant, yikes!). But I get decent results (weakness is mostly gone) on a " modified Atkins " , which is trying to keep my carbohydrates under 20 g, *except* I eat unlimited non-starchy vegetables. NOTE: My doctor said to watch the fat content though, as she said " mitochondria are involved in fat digestion " so I may have a problem with it. But I haven't noticed any new symptoms. Take care, RH > Hi Laurie, Thanks for the clarification. Guest guest
RH, What are your vision problems? Do you have double vision or blurring? I have both, plus I see color hue different in each eye. I can tell something is blue, but it wont be the same shade. Do you have that or anyone on here? Also, on the mutation not found.......they have been looking for my McArdle;s mutation for years, and it is still not found. It is none of the known ones although it was proven by the missing enzyme that I have that for sure. Smiles to you, Re: ketogenic diet > There are a variety of " true " ketogenic diets, which vary in the > ratio of fats to protein and carbs. Guest guest
> RH, > What are your vision problems? Do you have double vision or blurring? Yes, I have both, not always at the same time. I have double vision to some extent most of the time, but usually it's only on the periphery, central is okay. But I do have full double vision sometimes (lately it is about 10 - 12 times per day, from one to 30 minutes at a time). > I have both, plus I see color hue different in each eye. I haven't noticed color differences, except when I go on Advil or similar for an extended period (more than a week). Seeing things as yellow is a listed side effect, and both me and my husband (he is unaffected by mito) get the yellow vision from taking Advil for a week or more. > Also, on the mutation not found.......they have been looking for my > McArdle;s mutation for years, and it is still not found. Guest guest
If you don't take biotin already, you may want to ask your doc about taking it as it helps with the fat breakdown issues of a high protein diet. ohgminion wrote: >There are a variety of " true " ketogenic diets, which vary in the >ratio of fats to protein and carbs.
