Hi all! Are any of you on the medication Florinef (Dawn, you are, if my

memory is right). My neurologist put me on it to help my dizziness.

They think the dizziness/lightheadedness is from lack of fluids. Has

this helped anyone in being able to drink more? I know it retains salt,

therefore retaining fluids. I am not sure if how I feel while on it, is

what others feel. If you are or have been on it, why were you put on it

and did it help? They are using this to try to avoid a g-tube as well.

Thanks and smiles,

a

Hi a, My endocrinologist suggested Florinef to help with

adrenal insufficiency, but I was reluctant to try it without first

checking aldosterone levels in a 24-hour urine collection. I agreed

that if aldosterone was low, I would try Florinef, but it came out

normal. Only cortisol was low. My understanding is that Florinef is

replacement for the adrenal hormone aldosterone, but all this took

place a year and a half ago, so my memory may be iffy. I do recall

that fluid retention was mentioned as a side effect and this was one

reason why I was reluctant to take it--I already have a lot of

problems with fluid retention. I also have a history of problems

with any medications that affect hormonal balance.

Take care,

Barbara

Barbara,

Thanks for sharing your experience. From reading my paper on

Florinef, it does say it is used to treat low levels of corticosoteroid

hormones. Another use is for certain types of low blood pressure. I

know my doctors worry about low blood pressure since I feel like I could

pass out when my fluid intake has been low and needs supplementation.

The blood pressure is usually okay though. I know the doctors do want to

retain the salt and fluid in me, to help with the dehydration issues.

You made a good point about checking out medications that can affect

hormonal balances. I didn't think of that. I have been on it a couple

days and can tell it does help with fluid retention! :-)

Smiles,

Krisitna
