Guest guest
Lauire, Thanks so much for all your valuable info on scooters. It was all VERY helpful. Sure hope you van is back to you and working well....and you are having a good-er day today. A quick bit of funny for you. I went to the scooter store today to return my rental and investigate eventual scooter purchase. The owner/salesman told me that given my state of health and mobility (I look totally normal....unless...) he was sure no insurance company would pay for it. We were there for a while asking questions and trying out the " Go-Go " scooter. We were outside, it was hot and I was tired from yesterday. I got up from the scooter and promptly went in to one of my " normal {cerebral palsy -look-alike maybe mito-I'm hot and tired} jerking and shaking episodes, during which I look weird but am quite coherant. I look pretty spectacular in one....(oh, I think that's I look like a SPECTACLE. !!!) Anyhow, he took my husband back inside once I'd gotten in he van and told him he wouldn't sell me a scooter because he didn't think I could safely drive one and he didn't 't want to be liable for a law suit. HUH????????? I ought to take him to court for discrimination. Heck, I drive a car and have a perfect driving record. I just don't drive if I'm hot and tired. Found the same model at my local drug store for $400 less. Now who is the " joke " on. I talked to my insurance company this morning and it's a toss up as to whether they will pay. We're going to do all the paperwork to pre-certify and then see, but I expect we will and up self paying. That's OK, it will be worth it to be able to do things with my hubby outside again. Again, Thanks so much for your help! Best Wishes, Anita
Guest guest
Anita I liked your story. Yes, you should report him for discrimination. At least certify him as a " jerk " . I have my van back and so far so good. Now I can start practicing backing my wheelchair into it. Just about the time I am getting the hang of it, it is gone again. Of course, it did give my body time to heal some bruises from chair attacks. Good luck with the insurance. laurie > > Reply-To: > Date: Wed, 02 Jun 2004 22:44:37 -0000 > To: > Subject: Thanks Laurie scooter brand/model recommendations? > > Lauire, Thanks so much for all your valuable info on scooters. Guest guest
Very well done Anita, If you think you can drive one go ahead and listen to your body after all you do drive a car? I also drive a car and have no problem I've been sick with MERRF disorder for 15 years.. This person you saw for your scooter is nothing but a salesman and has no understanding of your disorder!! As for me its the same if I'm hot and tired with an empty stomach I will not look very normal while walking. I say if you will use it go ahead you will enjoy life better but do exercise a little at home just use a few pounds dumbbells so you don't just depend on your scooter exercising a little does help at least for me. I can not tell you I feel a lot better since I work out but I definitely feel stronger. Take care Anita and good luck with your scooter! Sal Thanks Laurie scooter brand/model recommendations? Guest guest
Hi Sal, Re: scooter and dumb salesman= Thanks for your kind words of encouragement! I was delighted to see your thread about exercising and dumbells. BRAVO to you for doing such good things for your body and I'm glad you're able to. I've been the same route of gym...UGH. Endurance training...... ARG! I'm now doing SHORT (2-5 minutes a session) workouts of yoga and ballet for flexibility and balance, rebounding for lymph and immune system, a little bit of stationary bicycle and LIGHT weight workouts, all AT HOME where I can " collapse " in peace afterwards. I can only manage 2 pounder weights, but I'm pretty tiny. Started off with 1 pound bags of beans. I'm thinking about MAYBE going to a warm therapy pool for water therapy classes (probably with arthritics and MS patients) while my hubby swims laps, but I'm not sure. The noise level might be pretty ugly and the classes are probably way longer than I'd like. Keep up the good work. You are an inspiration! Guest guest
Hi, Anita Glad to hear you are trying different physical things. I have found the endurance stuff a nightmare. Just cant keep up the pace, even with a very slow easy aerobic group. I really think the weights, (only as heavy as we can handle) with plenty of rest in between, following weight lifiting principles, is a good thing to try, if the doc approves it of course. Guest guest
Hi Sunny, So sorry to hear of all your hassles with the doc and the health challenges you are facing, but glad you are able to get some relief with the weight lifting. Hope the next 10 days are good-er ones and we'll miss you till you get back. Best Wishes, Anita
Guest guest
Hi Ann, Only you know your body better than anyone else go to places that you can go, and do things you know you can.. I try to stay away from places to crowded and noisy.. I hope my vitamin cocktail plus my workout program will do me well. Keep up the good work, Sal Re: Thanks Laurie scooter brand/model recommendations? Hi Sal, Re: scooter and dumb salesman= Thanks for your kind words of encouragement!
