Guest guest
Sal Most of us take the carnitine and CoQ10. I take Carnitor (prescription) and Q-gel (CoQ10 made by Tishcon that is the most bio-available). I can't say they give me more energy, but at the same time, I will not be without them, as my mito has not progressed nearly as fast as before since being on them. I have had to go off of them for a muscle biopsy and felt terrible without them. I know they improve my mental energy if not my physical energy. laurie > > Reply-To: > Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 02:15:57 -0000 > To: > Subject: MERRF DISORDER (ABOUT VITAMINS AND DIETS) > > HELLO I HAVE (MERRF SYNDROM) MYOCLONIC EPILEPTIC WITH RED REDGED > FIBERS. Guest guest
Hi Laurie, My naturopath has had me taking non-prescription CoQ 10 (Lipoquinone-100mgs) and L-Carnitine (330mgs) for a long time. I've been paying for then out of pocket (ARG, $$$$!!), but they have been worth their weight in gold as far as how much better I feel on them. I'm going to be seeing my MD soon and I'd like ask her about my getting them in a form that insurance would pay for , i.e., via prescription. You mentioned the Carnitor is prescription only, so that would probably qualify. Do you know if there's much difference between L-Carnitine and Carnitor? As far as the Q-gel by Tishcon, is that prescription only , too? Any major differences there either? THANKS! Anita

Guest guest
Anita The Carnitor is a prescription so it is regulated by the FDA (if in the US), so it is of known quality and strength. It is L-Carnitine, but in prescription form. The over the counter kind may not be as pure or the same strength from one batch to another. I'm sorry to say that not many of us can get the CoQ10 covered by insurance. I get some of mine covered, but not by prescription insurance. The Tishcon Q-gel has orphan drug status, so it is worth trying to get it covered. Good luck getting it all covered. It is expensive. laurie > > Reply-To: > Date: Wed, 26 May 2004 01:16:47 -0000 > To: > Subject: Re: MERRF DISORDER (ABOUT VITAMINS AND DIETS) > > > > Hi Laurie, My naturopath has had me taking non-prescription > CoQ 10 (Lipoquinone-100mgs) and L-Carnitine (330mgs) for a > long time. Guest guest
Laurie, Thank so much for your info about the Carnitor and Q-gel. We shall see how my insurance company reacts. I have an insurance company which has been surprisingly good to me over the years with my Lyme Disease needs, when other people's insurance companies were rejecting THEIR needs, so I hope my good forutune will continue. I have been SO sorry to read of your van trials and tribulations. Glad you survived the latest of the " attack of the frankly, cranky, balky van " . SO glad you FINALLY got home OK. You are one AMAZING woman! Hugs, Anita < >
Guest guest
Anita Thanks for the compliment. They have to replace the fuel pump which they hope to do tomorrow. Get as much info as you can to present to your insurance. There are several articles on the UMDF website and a good article on the MDA website. laurie > > Reply-To: > Date: Wed, 26 May 2004 18:34:31 -0000 > To: > Subject: Re: MERRF DISORDER (ABOUT VITAMINS AND DIETS) > > > Laurie, Thank so much for your info about the Carnitor and Q-gel. > We > shall see how my insurance company reacts. Guest guest
Hi Sal, I " probably " have a rare type of mito disorder called Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Complex Deficiency (PDCD), so I'm not sure if my experience with nutritional supplements is the norm. My positive reaction to things like L-Carnitine and Co Q 10, as well as a bunch of other nutritional supplements including manganese, zinc, B1 injections, B complex injections, niacin, alpha lipoic acid, taurine, and biotin work within an hour. If I forget to take them and am even a few hours late, the jerking, ataxia, tremors, muscle weakness, brain fog, supersensitivity top sound (hyperacusis) etc., return with venegeance. I'm fortunate to be able to get relief nutritionally because I'm almost a universal reactor in that I can't take drugs, even OTC pain relievers. Guest guest
Thank you Anita, I also wish you the best what you described about the jerks looks pretty much like what happens to me. I was wondering with your nutritional diet does it control your jerks completely? In my case I still cant and is quite frustrating but hopefully Carnitine & Qo10 will help.. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Guest guest
Sal I take the prescription " Lamictal " which almost completely controls my myoclonus (jerking) unless I have really overdone it. laurie > > Reply-To: > Date: Thu, 27 May 2004 17:27:21 -0400 > To: > > Subject: Re: MERRF DISORDER (ABOUT VITAMINS AND DIETS) > > Thank you Anita, I also wish you the best what you described about the jerks > looks pretty much like what happens to me. Guest guest
Hi Sal, In my case with PDCD (probably NOT your " average " mito disease) I am lucky that the L-Carnitine and C0Q10, plus a WIDE range of (specific for me via tests) nutritional supplements including B 1 (thiamine) and B complex injections, specific amino acids, and MANY minerals plus lots of organic butter, " Udo Blen Oil (a high omega 3-6-9-fatty acid oil blend) and a ketogenic diet generally keep me pretty much seizure, jerk, and tremor free now. However, if I miss even one component by even a couple of hours, or am under a lot of stress or physical exercise without taking my " regime " more frequently, they all return, so I know it's effective " symptom management " , but not " cure " . Interestingly, perhaps because PDCD can " screw up " sodium ion channel function, GREEN veggies usually cause me to seize, unless I eat them in very small quantities, perhaps because they are so high in potassium and that throws the sodium/potassium balance off. A heck of a thing for a vegetarian!!! Best Wishes in your quest for help and answers that will work for you. Guest guest
Hi Anita, Wow you really have to be disciplined I can tell your a strong woman to go through all this! For me to take a few pills a day its a struggle I cant see myself going through a strict diet plus injections like you. I guess I'm lucky and should not complain as I can see how people like you can be an inspiration for me to be more disciplined. Talk to you soon Anita, Sal Re: MERRF DISORDER (ABOUT VITAMINS > AND DIETS) > > > > > > > > > > Hi Laurie, My naturopath has had me taking non-prescription > > CoQ 10 (Lipoquinone-100mgs) and L-Carnitine (330mgs) for > a > > long time. Guest guest
Hi Sal, Thanks for the kind words! Not sure " disciplined " OR " strong " apply. I suspect " desperate with a strong will to live " might . By essentially having to " go it alone " without a lot of positive traditional MD input (other than 1st- it's all in your head; then- we don't know what's wrong with you , live with it, and you'll probably get get sicker)...... I've been forced to explore a lot of other healing alternatives, some of which lead me to nutritionally savvy alternative/integrated medicine MD's and naturopaths. I am so blessed to have my symptoms of 22 years to be gradually improving over the past several years on my nutritional regime. Now, with the help of some wonderful and generous mitos I am learning more about the 'why " . Healing Best Wishes, Anita
