Guest guest
I think it is a problem to that extreme for many kids with ASD. One time when Royce was very little - 4 or 5 yo - I accidently shut the car door on his hand. He stood there with his hand in the door. He didn't even blink. I had walked around the car and I started yelling at him to hurry up...of course, he didn't move. Finally I went back around to move him physically when I saw his hand in the door. I screamed and opened the door and was all upset and THEN he started crying - only because I was upset. His hand was pretty fine, hard to believe. The other problem he had was ear infections. It's like he never knew he had one until it was past bad. He would start crying and I would take him to do the doc only to find out the infection had perforated his ear drum by that point. It wasn't until the pain was severe before he would notice it. But he has hands that do not feel as well as they should and he still doesn't cry a lot in pain over anything. He's wrecked on his bike many times and doesn't even notice until I tell him he is bleeding on his socks or something. Roxanna > Our main concern as parents is the lack of response to pain. Interesting...Royce did have what looked like finger prints on his back around age 4ish and we at first panicked, thinking someone had grabbed him too hard or something. It turned out he was trying to do somersaults and instead of bending his back as he went over, he went over with his back straight - smack onto the floor. The bruises were the result of his spine hitting the floor. Roxanna ö¿ö Autism happens...
Guest guest
My son, who is 4 months, 3 weeks and has tort and plagio has an appointment with a neurologist tomorrow (we were on a cancellation list). We were asked to have any tests (only an ultrasound of the head has been done) with us. What should I expect the appointment to be like? Is there anything specific I should be asking for? Tests? X-rays? Any info is greatly appreciated!! Thank you!
Guest guest
Print out this link. It has a list of questions to ask the dr. Then you can write down right on the list, any questions you come up with that aren't already on there. Is your son already in pt for his tort? If not, you definitely need to get a referral for it. If you can't get it from the neuro, call your pede and see if you can get it there. Good luck and please let us know how it goes. Guest guest
Hi, we saw a cranio facial plastic surgeon, not a neuro. I think they want to look at the head shape, feel the soft spots to make sure they are open and recommend a band depending on severity. Our doc measured her head with calipers to determine that her brachy (flat in back) was severe. And he wrote us the Rx for a band. If they are afraid that the the plates of the head have fused (craniosynostosis) they will order an xray or ct scan. If the bones have fused too early brain growth may be restricted and surgery may be needed (this is rare). We didn't have any xrays or CT for our daughter. My daughter saw the specialist about the same time (4 mo 1 wk) and got her starband 3 wks later. It has made a huge difference. Since your son has tort, you may also get a referal for PT if you're not already doing it. -christine mom to sydney/ 9.5 mo/ starband 5-31-06 > > My son, who is 4 months, 3 weeks and has tort and plagio has an > appointment with a neurologist tomorrow (we were on a cancellation > list). Guest guest
I think you should definitely continue with the chiropractor. I've been taking Tiernan to one for two months and it has helped tremendously with his tort. Our chiro. is not a traditional one, he actually does the B.E.S.T. method which involves pressure points. It's been amazing. On the other stuff, you need to do what you feel most comfortable with. PT is a very good thing, and as long as your insurance will cover it, I say go for it. Banding.... same ol' advice, if you won't be happy with this headshape when he's older, you may want to push for a helmet. I know, there's soooo much to look at with these little tykes! The doctor said that ph's tort and plagio were "very mild" and that his fontenelle (sp?) was still open. He was impressed with his head movement and said that he would like to see him in 2 months for another exam. He did not recommend a helmet/band at this time and said that he did not feel that other tests (xray/cat, etc.) were warranted. Although I am happy (my chiropractor recently said the same thing) I just do not want to take any chances. He would like for us to continue with p/t, home exercises and did not comment either way on the chiro, but did say to wait to helmet/band. Any thoughts? How low will we go?
