I am using a rented Egnell Elite hospital pump & can't wait to return it! On the up side, Bethany latched on and had a full feeding last night - hooray! She followed with 2 oz. from the bottle, but I was so thrilled. Today has been more down as she is only latching on for a few sucks at a time, but she is more consistent than ever with that at least. I would like some opinions: Should I start to really push offering her breast every 30-60 minutes as possible, if only for a few sucks to try and get her nursing more? She is in the sling almost all the time, so this isn't that difficult to do, but it would mean disturbing her sleep. Has anyone else done this at all? Meanwhile, GOOD FOR YOU, Dawn! Breast babies will nurse after the milk has slowed down and they aren't eating very much just to stimulate the breast to make more. I suggest cutting out the bottle and offering as much as possible!! Sometimes when your baby has been getting a measured amount from a bottle, you tend to not have the confidence to know they are really getting enough. My first two we're pros at breastfeeding, it was me that had overproduction, pain and other issues. Can someone explain to me the benefits of the Medela Double Pump over others? You do both breasts at once instead of one at a time, and it is more powerful then others. It's great when you only have a few minutes to pump. mother of 3months (boy) and Avery 5yrs. Guest guest Posted October 22, 2000 Report Share Posted October 22, 2000 Ethan has feeding problems too - takes about 2 ounces every 4-6 hours. You can't get them to eat if they won't wake up (Ethan's problem) or if they aren't hungry. If you think it is a sleeping thing, then try what I do. I take Ethan out of the sling without using measures to keep him asleep, and I lay him down. Once he starts to fidgit, I change him. Diapers, undershirt, socks, clothes and all. I take my time :-) For me, the next step is giving him his multitudes of medications - but you can skip that step :-) By this point Ethan is either fully awake and ready to eat - or is still to sleepy. If he still won't wake up - its a lost cause and he problably wasn't hungry ANYWAYS. IMO - pushing the breast at a child that doesn't want it, is only going to aggravate the two of you - mostly you. Are you supplementing by choice or on the advice of a doctor? We supp because Ethan isn't gaining well because of his heart. If he won't nurse - he won't take a bottle. I don't stress either, because although a "normal" baby should gain 6-8 ounces a week, minimum, Ethan gains 2-3 and is not yet considered "failure to thrive" - he is CLOSE to the line, straddling it maybe, but he is still gaining although he is in the 5th percentile :-) Tiny little thing he is, but hey - HE'S GAINING. I would hold off on the bottle if at all possible. Or at least until nighttime if you feel like it isn't time to drop it completely. I would like some opinions: Should I start to really push offering her breast every 30-60 minutes as possible, if only for a few sucks to try and get her nursing more? If all Bethany is doing is a few sucks, the time at the breast may confuse your body by making it harder for you to let down. That noted, I would say that you should try offering every 60 minutes and when you know that she is (predictably) going to latch-on for her few sucks, preceed that offering by some breast massage or hand expressing to get your milk "ready to go." Then try to keep her sucking long enough that she gets a good drink (nurses for a whole minute or experiences a let-down kind of time frame.) She is in the sling almost all the time, so this isn't that difficult to do, but it would mean disturbing her sleep. Has anyone else done this at all? Actually I haven't had to go through it, but if she is used to having your breast there in her face, then getting the nipple in her mouth is just the next step. If Bethany isn't considered a sleepy baby, the general wisdom is to allow 2-3 hours during the day between wakings and 4-5 hours at night.
