I have a Freestyle glucometer now because I've been experiencing too low of sugars when I come off the TPN and thats why the tapering was increased to 2 hrs. Well the blood glucose registered 221. We called my TPN team and NS and let them know. Any ideas what would cause this drastic change? I took it again an hour off the TPN and it was still slightly high but better at 115 HI , When I had that one dose of steriods through the nerve block I had done 3 yrs ago, my blood sugars were an issue for several months afterwards. I got the flu during the middle of that time and my blood sugars elevated even more severely during that time. Like Laurie said, any type of stress can increase the blood sugar, and with that iron reaction last night, your body is probably still recovering. You're not spilling ketones or anything else in your urine too are you? What did NS and the TPN doc have to say about it? Malisa

Does it smell like that? Some of the urine test strips have more than one thing to test for on them. I have ones that test for protein, specific gravity, glucose, ketones, blood, nitrates, and a few others. Malisa
Guest guest
The only thing I can think of is that my diabetes is opposite than most " normal " people. When I exercise or am stressed, my blood sugar goes up as the pancreas doesn't work well with less energy. Could you be having the same kind of reaction? Just a thought. Please let us know what Dr. Cohen has to say about this. Hang in there. laurie > From: LILQT4U1984@... > Reply-To: > Date: Tue, 4 May 2004 19:09:52 EDT > To: tpnsupport , mito , > > Subject: blood sugar probs. and other stuff > > I use the urine glucose dipsticks everyday at the end of my TPN to check my > sugars. Guest guest
KetoStrips^ Ketone Test Strips http://ph-ion.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=21> Are you burning fat? KetoStrips^ ketone test strips http://ph-ion.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=21> measure the level of urinary ketones, the markers that can indicate that your body is in ketosis / lipolysis. The strips will change pink or purple, depending upon how many ketones are present. The more ketones you excrete, the darker the shade of purple the strip will turn. Using KetoStrips^ ketone test strips can be an extremely convenient aid to doing a low-carb diet. Many people find them to be a psychological aid; a support mechanism. KetoStrips^ are also less expensive than most brands. Ketostrips^ are economical, easy to use, and FDA approved. KetoStrips^ ketone test strips come complete with directions, indicator color chart, and a guide to how to interpret results. KetoStrips^ - A Must-have for Low-Carb Dieters Ketones are indicators that your body is in ketosis / lipolysis. Ketosis simply means that you are using your fat stores as your primary fuel source (not to be confused with keto-acidosis). The byproducts of fat metabolism are ketones. Ketones in your urine give a clear indication that you are metabolizing fat. The higher concentration of ketones in your urine, the more fat you have burned. Testing with Ketostrips help you to measure your progress. If you're on a low-carb diet, KetoStrips^ ketone test strips are a must-have! Ketosis, which is a perfectly normal metabolic process, is often confused with ketoacidosis, which is a life-threatening condition. Ketoacidosis is the consequence of insulin-deficient subjects having uncontrollable blood sugar levels, a condition that can occur as well in alcoholics and people in a state of extreme starvation. Ketosis and ketoacidosis may sound vaguely alike, but the two conditions are virtually polar opposites and can always be distinguished from each other by the fact that the diabetic has been consuming excessive carbohydrates and has high blood sugar, in sharp contrast to somebody on a low-carb diet. Because every person's metabolism is different, the strips turn different shades of purple or pink for different people. Results may vary depending upon the time of the day, whether or not you exercise and what you last ate. One should begin by testing themselves frequently in order to develop an average reading. The package label shows various colors but one should not necessarily worry about the exact level of ketosis they will find on the strip. KetoStrips^ are especially helpful at he start of a low-carb diet. KetoStrips^ come packaged in a pack containing 80 strips. We also offer discounts for buying 3 packs. Guest guest
I am also the opposite as when I exercise my blood sugar goes up instead of down--my sugars are also always in the 250's unless I take insulin to get them down. Or, working on the computer--brain work--gets them down.
