Guest guest
Thank you very much Donna I will have to suck it up thank you kyle Donna wrote: Hi , Welcome. This is a great group. I had smoked since I was 17, quit when I was 40, and I've been smoke- free for 18 years (this Jan 14.) OOOOPs, I'm telling my age! Oh well! I tried the gum and was getting hooked on it, so I went cold turkey. Every time I wanted a cigarette, I drank a glass of water. I peed the nicotine out of me! I was over the physical addiction in about a week. It took longer to get over the habit, but that soon faded, too. You have to take it one day at a time. If you can go to bed knowing you got through the day without a cigarette, it's awsome. I think you have to forget the 'crutches,' suck it up and just do it. Nobody was ever more hooked on cigarettes than me. After awhile of being smoke-free, you will smell other smokers and realize how nasty smoking really is! It's a habit that not only hurts you, but the people around you. That should be motivation enough to give it another try. Good luck, Donna N. > > Hello every one I am new to this group. Guest guest
Everybody needs to figure out what works for them. Everyone is different. Smoking cessation classes help to reinforce the whole process. I only smoked from age 18 to 28 (50 now) but I was a 2 to 4 ppd smoker who HAD to have my nicotine fix every 20 - 30 minutes. The ONLY difference between success and failure is one, only one, and just one cigarette - the next one. If you never smoke that next one, you've got it kicked. That was my mantra - Only one cigarette is the difference between success and failure. I quit cold turkey and the first week was hell. I won't say it got better after that, just less horrid. And got less and less horrid as time went on. After a short while, I realized how wonderful it was to get that monkey off my back and not have my life revolve around when I could get my next nicotine fix. Also, about the time I quit, (being a healthcare worker) I had a forty-something year old patient who knew he was dying of lung cancer, look me straight in the eyes and tell me to quit before what was happening to him happened to me. I don't remember his name and I doubt he lived long after that but I will never forget him or the message he gave me. Figure out what will work for you, seek out all the support you can, and never smoke that one next cigarette. I send you my most sincere wishes for success. It's the best thing you'll ever do for yourself and those who love you. C How do I quit? Hello every one I am new to this group. Guest guest
The best way to quit is " cold turkey " . This is the way that I quit smoking 34 years ago and it works although the first few days are tough. All the best, How do I quit? Hello every one I am new to this group. Guest guest
, for me, setting a date was big, it gave me a time when I knew on that date I would then follow my new goal. I also looked at all the times that I really wanted a cig. For me it was right after eating and driving in a car. I would talk myself through it, like, " What is not smoking in a car really gonna do? Are you gonna die by not smoking? No, you just won't have a cig, that's the only change. " I also had my church praying for me, that God would ease my withdrawls and give me the strength to not give in. Another thing, taking it one day at a time. Thinking about not smoking for six mos was too overwhelming, but getting through this day wasn't. At times it was getting through the next 5 minutes! A final thing that helped me was weaning down. I was at my peak close to 2 pks/day. I weaned myself down to under 10 cigs/day, then under 5 cigs a day. The helped me avoid some withdrawls and avoid some of the psychological stresses. The patch, gums, and pills all made me sick, I could never use that approach for me. I was at the health food store yesterday and saw some natural supps to help quit smoking. These might be helpful because we have something in our bodies called nicotinic receptors. These receptors affect mood and other neurotransmitters. I think it's dopamine that plummets when we quit? When we suddenly have a big drop in these neurotransmitters we feel like crap. That's why some people use wellbutrin and other anti-psychotic meds, to lessen the effects. Natural supps, like l-theanine and St. 's wort, can help boost the body more naturally and gently. Quitting smoking is just plain hard on the body, but you can do it!
