Everyone has to find their own " coping " method --- none of us find interests in the same things. I work towards trying to help others --- it keeps me from focusing on my own problems, putting them in the back of my mind, and " easing " the pain. I suppose I've had pain for so long that I've learned a technique of blocking it out, for the most part. I don't know what it is, or how I do it, I just do. Not all of it ---- but the minor pain. I can actually block it to the point of having to think about it to know if it still hurts LOL With surgery approaching, it's a little harder to block, but to focus on how much better you will feel should help (this coming from one that was in tears for weeks, worrying about surgery) LOL But to be totally honest, it wasn't so much the surgery I was dreading --- I have " store-bought " upper teeth --- the only people that have seen me without them is the dentist and his assistants --- not even hubby. My biggest fear is / was that they wouldn't put them back in before they let someone in to see me. (blushing big time here LOL) Anyway, the whole idea of the surgery is to relieve your symptoms and prevent progression, and you just have to focus and believe that it's going to work, and that you will be able to resume an almost normal life afterwards. Good luck to you --- You are going to feel so much better. Guest guest
How to stay positive???!!!???? Think positive! but also ACCEPT that your body is not working right right now and that you may need to let a lot of uncessary things slide for a while. Delegate! Think of it as a highly effective hands on crash course in managerial skills. If you can motivate those 5,7,9,12 whatever year olds you have....they will benefit their entire lives from it...and it will leave you more comfortable and able to meet their real needs...love & affection & guidance. Let the kids push you around in a wheelchair while doing their school shopping if you are tired. They can fold laundry while watching TV. Probably the best way to stay positive at this point is to be careful not to push yourself too hard physically...over fatigue interferes with sleep and increases pain and quickly becomes a vicious cycle. If you are all stressed and in so much pain....that is much harder on the family than those few things you are thinking you have to do. Consider taking a few days off prior to your surgery to wrap up details so you are not overly stressed. Get earplugs!! It is a cheap easy way to get some peace & quiet during one of those massive headaches, it takes the edge off crankiness too Hope something here helps, Meribeth in mi cm1, surgery 9/99 I Re: How to stay Positive > I know what this person is going through.. Guest guest
When I get depressed I consider all of the children who have so bravely faced Chiari and far more devastating illnesses. It keeps my self-pity in check. Vikki in town, PA
Guest guest
Regarding the question of staying positive...I tend to look at in a very pragmatic manner. What exactly can be gained by a negative attitude?...IMHO essentially nothing. What can be gained by a positive attitude???... IMHO many healing properties ( plus one is just a lot nicer to be around <g>) To me positive is easier <g> Sally R ACM...decompression '91...Hydro...VP shunt..doing well in Bethlehem,Pa with NO medications <g>
Guest guest
Dear Vikki, Thinking of the children certainly does keep things in perspective :0) There is always someone out there that is worse off than us. I keep positive by thanking God EVERY DAY for giving me Chiari. My life has been blessed in so many ways as a result of having Chiari. The friends I have gained, the knowledge I have gained. I have learned to notice and appreciate the little things in life. But most of all Chiari has brought me closer to Christ. I guess I learn things the hard way. I wouldn't change my life for anything. I have become such a strong and compassionate person from having this defect. I have also learned that what you focus on gets bigger. So focus on the positive. Remind yourself what you have, what your strenghts are. No matter how bad off each of us are, we all have something to be thankful for, some strengths!! One thing we all have in common is the friends we have on the group. That is definately something to be thankful for and something positive. And last but not least guys, I live by this addage. As our dear friend Chip always says, " The body achieves what the mind believes. " I believe in that with all my heart. Guest guest
HOW TO STAY POSITIVE! One thing that helps me, is to think of someone who is in worse shoes then I am! It works all the time! Or I think about how lucky I am to have so many people who care about me! A roof over my head! I think how it could be worse if I was homeless. There are so many ways to help yourself staying positive! We have heard from many with great ideas on this list already! Of course this doesn't mean you need to stay positive ALL the time! Sometimes its good to let loose and just feel sorry of yourself for a day! Get all those emotions out. But then, you need to dust your knees off and get up once more! Staying negative does no one any good! Research and research some more! Learn as much as you can! Not only about your disease, but about what you can do to help your body! AND....... And I PRAY!!! And I PRAY And I PRAY! God bless Robin
