I have not been seeing an ortho for a long time, for almost 2 months, although I'm still having braces (only on lower teeth), due to the change of ortho. I have yet to see my new ortho, as my appointment will on be on next Tuesday. For the past 2 months till now, which is from the last day I saw my ortho for appointment, I'm concerned with what I'm experiencing now. I realize that it's normal to have some soreness/pain for 1-2 days after each monthly adjustment by the ortho, but I do not think that this should happen after a long time. I had some soreness for 3 days after the last time I went to my ortho, but later, it's fine. Throughout the 2 months without seeing an ortho, there had been twice when I experienced slight pain on my right molar. Pain on only that tooth, I'm sure that it's not due to caries... the same as the pain experienced after braces adjustment. On each occasion of pain, the slight pain only lasted for about a day. This morning, I noticed some difference when I bite. Usually, my lower front teeth (on right side) touch quite a lot with the upper teeth, but today, the touch was reduced. There's a bit of soreness on the same molar. I was a bit shocked when I looked at the mirror to check my bite to see what's wrong. When I bit hard, I almost couldn't believe it that the same molar looked a bit 'tender'. It moved a bit to the outer direction, not to another direction though. Whenever I bite, the tooth slided a little. The molar is bound with a band. But aren't movement of teeth under orthodontic treatment supposed to be unnoticeable? Is this very unusual? I felt like skipping a class in the morning to go and seek help, but didn't do so after thinking twice. I wonder should I see my old ortho (but her office is far away from where I am now) / the new ortho at the dental school a.s.a.p. / wait until next Tuesday when I have my appointment? also, I wonder if the tooth will ever come off if I do nothing? It's crucial that we all see our orthos as scheduled, which needs to be at least once a month. If you see anything strange happening, go see him/her immediately! The worse thing we can do is self-diagnose and second-guess instead of seeing the experts! (I've been just as guilty). The orthos go through a lot of training and studying (just open one of the medical textbooks they use and you'll see) and they really are the best people to diagnose the problem. Two months is a month too long to not be seeing an ortho! You could be grinding your teeth while you sleep, and unchecked, the teeth will move. And they often move into the wrong position, which then makes things worse, as one tooth will then put pressure on the otehr teeth it's now in contact with, and cause more domino effect movement. I was hesitant about going back to my orth after my surgery, but I'm glad I did, as he removed the surgical hooks and the thick arch wire, and replaced it with new, thinner arch wires, put elastics in the back, and cleaned everything up. Go see your ortho!! Go see the one who can get you in the quickest. I had a similar incident with my back molar on my lower right side...I posted about this a little while back. (Check the archives for " Horrible Day " ) Anyway, what had happened was the band around the molar had been pulled up. The tooth was very sensitive/painful and I could feel it move. It took them awhile to find it, but they did and fixed it immediately. Go see your ortho, girl. Good luck.
