Guest guest
Hi guys, OK I have had several E-mail me off list asking about how I was doing with the gastric by-pass. I decided I would just write one response if you all don't mind, as Kira has been very ill again and is having trouble with siezure/dysautonomia attacks again so my time is way short. Anyway here goes. I started out at 385 lbs on August 14,2003. I just went in to my doctor and as of Friday I now weigh 251 lbs. So lets see, that is 134 lbs I have lost in just about 8 months. That is a whole person!!!!! My blood pressure is way down, my diabetes has pretty much resolved itself in that I don't need to take any meds for it anymore. I have had some trouble with vitamin B-12 deficiency and calcium break down. I am having a bit of gal bladder trouble as well currently, but for the most part I have done well. I have been very careful with what I am eating and have managed to stay on the positive side of acidotic except for about 5 days total. I have gone through some muscle weakness that I think was kicked off by the lack of nutrition, but when I fed through the G-tube it help to resolve the extra fatigue. I have fatigue anyway normally. But I can say loosing the weight has helped me a lot. I have not lost a lot lately, I am on a plateau at the moment, which kind of freaks me a bit because I don't want to stay in the 200's, but the fact that the surgery is working for me is a good thing, my metabolic rate has changed a bit but not much so it is scary to think I am slowing down. It is much easier on me to only be loosing 4 to 5 lbs a month now than 20 or so before. They want my calories high enough that I am only loosing a lb a week. That is very hard to do when you can't eat a whole lot. I have gotten into some bad habits of eating fatty foods which kicks the Mito in me off, just to bring up the calorie intake. So I am working with the nutrionalist to try and straiten that out as well. So over all I am a Mito person who has done somewhat well after having this type of surgery. People ask if I recommend it to Mito people. Heres how I look at it. For me and this is for me only guys. I was going to be dead in a year from uncontrollable Blood pressure and extreme risk of Stoke. No one knows why I didn't stroke out. So for me I didn't have a choice, I had to try and save my life. No other conventional weight loss program worked for me for several reasons, but mostly due to my metabolic system and lack of it working properly. I am now able to keep up with the demands of my kids much better, having three Mito kiddos isn't easy as you all well know, I can keep up with my classroom better as well. I don't have sleep apnea anymore so I am more rested, my blood pressure is normal again, my stoke risk is down greatly. For me it was the right choice. It is very risky to say the least for a Mito person to have the surgery. I constantly fight the acidosis issues and will for the rest of my life. Am I happy I did it? Yes, I am, It has not been easy and the vomiting I do is for the most part the pits! But I can move again without feeling like I was gonna pass out, the energy level has increased greatly, and I look better for sure. I am not a skinny mini and probably won't be able to return to that totally, but I have dropped over 10 dress sizes in 8 months. Yes, I am pretty much naked as I can't afford to keep up in the clothes department. LOL I am going to see Cohen next week so I will post after I return from that appointment and let you know what all he thinks. I know he is wanting to see how I have done, as I am the first to his knowledge Mito person who has had the surgery. If some of you are looking into this, let me tell you it is vital that your surgeon understand you are a Mito person and the anesthesiologist as well. I had mine done at Cedars Sini In Beverly Hills CA. Very knowledgeable doctor and I still ended up Vent dependent for 4 days in the ICU unit post surgery. Very scary for my family and me when I woke up and realized it was 4 days later. If you are looking into this and want to talk to me further about this, I am more than happy to do that, just send me your number and I will call you inbetween the happenings at this household. Ihope all are doing well! big hugs to you, O When the door of happiness closes, another opens, but often times we spend so much time looking at the closed door, we don't see the open door. Guest guest
So glad to hear this procedure was successful for you. I wish you continued success. Your family must be thrilled with the new you as well. ) My thoughts to anyone who does not NEED to have this procedure done. I had a friend/co-worker who recently died after undergoing this surgery. I believe due to a blood clot and that is always a risk with any surgery--I know. She was only 52 and had a new grandson that she was excited about. She was in the 200's weight catagory when she decided to have the surgery. She just left the company we worked for about a year ago and decided at her age to go back to school for nursing---something she had always wanted to do. I was so happy for her. This was such a loss of life. , I in no way am implying that having the surgery is not right for some people and I am so happy it worked for you. It is scary though. Continued success ) Sheila
Guest guest
I'm glad that you are seeing improvement from the surgery. It sure must have been a hard decision and very scary to know what was ahead. I'm glad you are slowing the weight loss down, so the mito monster doesn't raise it's ugly head. laurie > From: mitooggo@... > Reply-To: > Date: Sat, 24 Apr 2004 13:17:20 EDT > To: Mitoldies , adultmito > Subject: Gastric Bypass Update on this Mito Mommy > > Hi guys, > > OK I have had several E-mail me off list asking about how I was doing with > the gastric by-pass.
