So glad he is getting the help he needs!!!

Will he need casting after getting scanned? We are getting the Hanger band and they scanned Luli - but are making the helmet from the scan - no casting needed! But maybe because it's Star they cast too- I don't know.

About eczema. Luli doesn't have it - but she does have sensitive skin - and when ever she gets a rash I use Aveeno Baby oatmeal cream and it seems to help. No fragrance or irritants. Does anyone know how this will work w/ a band??? We get our band on Wed.

A CT scan is typically done before you get a band to rule out craniosyntisis.

He's mild/moderate plagio and should only need his band for about four months. YAY - it may be off by his 1st birthday. We were hoping to have our insurance cover Children's Memorial (where he's gone for everything else), but I just found out today that Scheck and Siress is where we're covered. He'll be getting a STARband (which is the one my husband and I really wanted in the first place). We go for our casting on June 8th.We also had to have a CT scan done before the band could be ordered as per our plastic surgeon's request. We had that done on Wednesday and will have the results on Monday. What should I expect to hear about the CT scan? Is that typical to have one done before casting?Again, thanks for all of the great support. I felt so ready for both appointments after reading all of your wonderful words of encouragement. Even with Chase's extensive medical issues (and this pales in comparison to heart surgery at 12 days old), it's still nice to have a support system around.Last question, any other moms out there with plagio/eczema babies? Chase's head is a major spot for eczema flare-ups and we already have the dermatologist on standby. Any ideas on how to help keep his scalp rash/itch free? Trust me - this is a very big concern for us!NikkiMom to Chase - soon to be STARbanded

Some places that provide the STARband have a STARscanner to scan your child, no casting necessary. At other locations they do the casting.

Just to let you know, I've heard terrible things about the STARscanner. It

is causing serious eye damage. The molding is a lot safer and is not that

big of a deal. I have a son who has gone through it (and was banded for 4

months with DOC Band) and it wasn't bad at all. DO not do the scanner. It

is so bad for theie eyes.

Some places that provide the STARband have a STARscanner to scan your child,

no casting necessary. At other locations they do the casting.

From Orthomerica's website:

STARscans™ are safe. The STARscanner has been classified and certified as a Class 1 laser scanning devise. Class 1 lasers are low-power lasers and are safe from all potential hazards. Other Class 1 laser products include laser printers, CD players, and CD-ROM devises.

Where have you heard about the StarScanner causing issues? Was it an

actual article or study? I'm curious..my son was scanned several

times with no issues. It provided us with detailed information on

his progress. I'm curious to hear back. I've never heard of this.

Thanks!

Is the STARscanner laser safe? The laser used in the STARscanner is of a lower intensity even than a supermarket scanner. It is a Class 1 laser - like those in CD players and laser printers - and is fanned and pulsed, meaning that it doesn't shine a direct light all the time. The scanner is a CE marked product, which means it conforms to certain mandatory health and safety requirements as set out in the European Directives. The laser used in it has been cleared to shine into the eye for up to 10 hours before any damage is caused, but the laser is actually only at the eye level for about half a second. The laser used is specifically designed to gather data - it is not a therapeutic laser like the ones used in eye operations and such like - and are perfectly safe.

Dear Molly,

I was unhappy to hear this about the starscanner in your email. Would you let

us all know

the source of the information so I can point it out to my ortho? We have been

scanned

about five times now and I have not noticed any problem at all with Genevieve's

eyes, but

she is not able to tell me as she is not yet one year old and is not talking. I

have loved

having the very precise measurement of her head to track her progress. She has

gone

from 8.6 mm diagonal difference to 3.7 mm diagonal difference in the space of

about 5-6

weeks. Please respond soon as my next appointment is on the 9th of June.

Thanks,

Ross Wauters

Martha Marx was the one that heard terrible things about the STARscanner (see e-mail below). I'd love to know the source of her information as well. I've only heard good things about the STARscanner:

From Orthomerica's website:
