I regret having a SARPE

This week when I met with my orthodontist and periodontalist, I was

asked how I felt about having a SARPE four months ago. I had to

honestly tell them that I regret having had it done. Hopefully a

year from now I will feel differently.

I still have numbness on my left upper lip, a phantom nose dripping

sensation and terribly uncomfortable STIFFNESS in my upper lip and

nose area. I have not regained any additional feeling or improved in

the past 5 weeks or so.

I had SARPE done Monday at Columbia. I am feeling the

numbness/stiffness under my nose. The last 2 nights I have woken up

and felt some pain that seemed to occur as blood rushed to the area

when I stood up. Other than that I feel fine. No nasal decongestion.

My doctor said I would possibly have numbness after 6 months.

Having broken several bones in the past, i personally have found

that it takes up to a year to gradually feel back to normal. I

would not get too depressed. I think your case will get better in

time.

I'm sorry to hear that this is the case for you. I had SARPE over a year ago

and did not experience numbness at all. I did, and do, however, experience the

same numbness you are taking about after having had my upper/lower/genio

surgery. In fact, the numbness and stiffness encompasses more of my face -

almost the whole lower half. I remain hopeful, however, that this too shall

pass. Do you have any sensations, like tingling or stinging?

Sharon,

Thanks very much for your kind message.

Yes, I do have other sensations besides the persistent numbness. In

addition to the phantom nose dripping sensation, I also have tickling

occasionally (but not pin pricks), some actual sharp pains, and

throbbing, especially in the morning when I first wake up. What's

bothering me the most, however, is the stiffness. I am worried that

the stiffness will never go away, ever.

If you'd like to read more about what I have been going through, I

also have a blog:

Again, thanks for your message. I hope that this facial discomfort

goes away for BOTH of us very soon.

I did not have SARPE, but had upper/lower/genio last August 2002. I

had the stiffness in the upper lip for quite a few months. It does go

away - the best thing I found was to exercise the upper lip (sneers,

puckers, fish lips, big evil grins ... that sort of thing).

That you are having other symptoms is promising. I found that the

symptoms went away much more gradually as the months progressed.

Initially I could see progress weekly, then monthly, then bi-monthly.

It does take a lot of patience and trust that your body is healing

itself.

Thank you very much for your kind response. I feel much better

hearing that your stiffness went away.

Do you mean that the phantom nose dripping sensation that I have, and

the tickling feeling, is a good sign for me?

I have been doing face execrises like puckering, making faces, etc.

It feels weird but at the same time it feels like it is doing some

good.

Hi Fred,

I didn't have the phantom nose dripping sensation, although I had

what seemed like a non-stop drippy nose for a few months. It's long

gone. Tickling is good! My upper palate was completely numb post-op

(I wasn't sure what I was feeling, it's strange isn't it?), one of

the last sensations to return for me was the ticklishness of this

area.

I had sharp jabs in my chin and found that more feeling returned a

few days later in that same area, so I started to associate the

jabbies with return of feeling.

Better these types of feeling than nothing at all - at least it's

entertaining ... for me, anyway.
